At Samaritans we are no strangers to pain and suffering, and we know the power of sharing difficult emotions, tragic stories and deep sorrow. We are here, 24 hours a day, seven days a week to listen when no one else will. And we've learned that, in doing so, we change lives, we build bridges and we give hope - both to the people we serve, and to ourselves.

We want to do more. In addition to the thousands of lives we make better through our helpline programs, education workshops, and grief support services, we want more people to know the power that comes from bringing compassion and kindness to your everyday life.

orange you happyWe are grateful that our Happier Boston campaign is getting media attention and increasing the conversation about the power of human connection to make a positive impact in people's lives. Please read the following wonderful articles that have come out in recent days in the Boston Globe and the New York Times, or watch the great interview with Gene Lavanchy on Fox News

Will smiling at someone you don't know on the train cure their depression? No. Will it change someone's life? Maybe. Kevin Hines, one of the only people to survive a suicide attempt from the Golden Gate bridge says that he was looking for a reason not to jump - for someone to make eye contact, to ask if he was okay. No one did.

your smile sharedYou can make a difference in someone's life, and you can help Samaritans in our efforts to increase our community's health and happiness: consider volunteering, help us think of sponsors for this campaign to help it grow bigger, make your own donation to share your happiness with others.

Best wishes for a happy and healthy holiday season,

The Annual Memorial Event: please join us

As you make your plans for the beginning of the new year, please mark Sunday, January 6th on your calendar to join us for Samaritans Annual Memorial Event.

Each year, we meet from 6-8pm at a church in Arlington Center to remember those lost to suicide - whether through song, a poem, a writing that captures our thoughts and feelings or through silent observance. Following the program, we will gather for coffee and the chance to reconnect and build upon the community of support we have created at Samaritans.

For more information, or to RSVP, visit the Annual Memorial webpage, or contact Debbie DiMasi, Director of Grief Support Services.

Marathon in the making

Marathon team2013

Our marathon team is off to an amazing start! While we are all trudging through a dreary, rainy and cold December, they have begun their training and their fundraising with great success!  Please visit our 2013 Marathon Team fundraising webpage to learn about their incredible stories and view their individual fundraising webpages, where many of them have already been raising much needed support for Samaritans' programs. We look forward to featuring each of our marathon runners in our upcoming "Marathon Monday Countdown" Facebook posts. Follow us on facebook to learn more about our fabulous team.

It's not too late to join in. If you have qualified for the Boston Marathon and/or have your own number, and would like to have one of the most amazing experiences of your life by joining our incredible team, please contact Garrett Owen.

We're getting ready for a rollicking, loud and powerful Make Noise to Save a Life event in 2013! The event is scheduled for January 20, 2013 at the House of Blues in Boston and is aimed at bringing people aged 18 and up together to make some noise to bring awareness to the issue of suicide prevention. Mark your calendars, and look for more information soon!
