Keep Your Family Learning This Summer?
Article courtesy of Military OneSource

School may be out for your kids this summer, but learning doesn't have to come to a stop. You can plan fun activities that focus on reading, writing, arithmetic, science, social studies and much more.

Be sure to choose activities that fit your family's interests. Perhaps you can start in the kitchen. Baking cookies together can be a tasty way to teach math skills:
  • Talk about measurements as you prepare the dough.
  • Count the cookies as you place them on the tray.
  • Teach multiplication by comparing rows: 4 x 6 and 6 x 4 both equal 24.
  • Teach division when it's time to eat the cookies: If a family of six has 24 cookies, how many cookies will each family member get?
The whole family can think up fun, creative ways to explore school subjects together. Here are a few suggestions:
  • Read with your family. Read to younger children daily. Follow the text with your finger as you read, and ask your child to describe the pictures. Encourage older children to read to their younger siblings. Schedule family reading time for 30 minutes several days each week. Visit the library regularly.
  • Make ABCs and vocabulary fun. On road trips, play games such as finding each letter of the alphabet on signs or license plates. Teach a new vocabulary word each night at dinner, and play family word games.
  • Encourage writing. Help your children find pen pals they can write to regularly. Encourage them to create a family storybook with words, drawings and photos.
  • Explore science. Plant a flower in a window pot or start a small garden together. Collect and identify bugs together. Learn to identify birds by their appearance and songs. Visit a national park and study the plants and animals you encounter. As a military family, you may be eligible for a no-cost America the Beautiful National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Pass.
  • Have fun with social studies. Visit local museums and historic sites. The Blue Star Museums program lets active-duty military and their families take no-cost trips to museums during the summer. Take virtual trips around the world by exploring foreign embassy websites.
  • Don't forget the fine arts. Take your children to plays and concerts. Stock up on arts and crafts supplies. Plan an art show at the end of the summer to showcase your kids' projects for friends and family. Let your children make home videos and host their own movie night.
For more suggestions on fun learning activities this summer, or for everyday support, contact Military OneSource at 800-342-9647 to speak with a consultant 24/7/365.
