New Teen Panel Begins Work!
At the 2014 Youth Symposium we were thrilled to welcome 10 new members to the Oregon Military Teen Panel! Our panel is now 14 members strong and includes representation from all seven regions in Oregon! Earlier this month the ORMTP held their first planning retreat and had an amazing adventure in Portland. This retreat included plenty of work as well as team building activities, a service learning project with the Oregon Food Bank, and dinner with Major General Daniel Hokanson, The Adjutant General, his wife, Kelly Hokanson and Michelle Kochosky, the State Family Program Director. Earlier in the retreat the teens had designed holiday ornaments, one of which was picked by our guests to represent Oregon on a National Guard Christmas Tree at The White House. The other ornaments will hang on The Adjutant General's personal Christmas Tree at Camp Withycombe. | Ms. Kelly Hokanson, Brytahni B. Jeff Heiser: Dealing with PTSD and Substance Abuse
On Monday, November 10, 2014, I had the opportunity to be able to listen to a Navy veteran speak about his service. Mr. Jeff Heiser, who lives in Florida, was just like any other teenager in high school- he messed around and didn't really think about his future. When his high school would host military related speeches, he always thought "There's no way I am going into the military." Two years after he graduated, however, he did for 10 years (1979-1990s). "I wanted to travel the world. I wanted paradise. So, I told myself that the first military recruiting office that I saw open I would go in and join that branch. I walked by the Marines, the Army, and the Air Force. None of them were open. I then walked past the Navy office, where I could see some men playing a card game."

Manage Your Social Media PresenceOPSEC stands for Operation Security and is the practice of making sure that private information stays private. This can include military information, but can also include personal information like addresses, birthdays and schools attended. While most people on social media are great people that you want to share your life with, we do encourage everyone to use these tools safety. To help you do there here are four different smart cards for Twitter, Facebook, Google+, and LinkedIn to assist you in determining how to ensure that the right people see only the things you want them to.
