New Fine Arts Club Inspires And Encourages Creative Students At PCA
The Fine Arts Club enjoyed its first outing on September 11th while capturing the beauty of downtown Charleston. Thirteen Upper School students grabbed their cameras and joined art teacher, Nicole Seitz, for a walk through the French Quarter for visual and historical inspiration. PCA parent, Karen Velazquez, came along and shared valuable photography tips and tricks. The Fine Arts Club is mentored by Nicole Seitz and high school choir teacher, Alysia Lambert, and is open to creative writers, poets, artists, singers, musicians, and actors in Grades 9-12 who are interested in contests, workshops, outings, and service opportunities (7th or 8th graders who may be interested can speak personally with Mrs. Seitz).
To get involved, contact Nicole Seitz at nseitz@palmettochristianacademy.org or Alysia Lambert at alambert@palmettochristianacademy.org.

Courage, Character, and Leadership for Life
How do we develop a culture of courage and equip our children with the biblical principles regarding the power and responsibility they have to stand up for others?
Palmetto Christian Academy is pleased to welcome internationally renowned speaker and author Paul Coughlin, founder of "The Protectors", on Wednesday, September 28th from 6:30 pm to 8 pm.
Unlike traditional anti-bullying efforts that focus upon reforming children who bully, Paul Coughlin's "The Protectors" focuses upon the potential strength, heroic desire, and rescuing capacity of bystanders, transforming them into "Alongside Standers". This is a wonderful opportunity for parents to partner with us in developing the spiritual maturity of our students and creating a culture which represents God's love and compassion.

5th Graders Share In Citizenship Ceremony
Written by PCA Mom Christie Romine
On Friday, September 17th as part of Constitution Day, our PCA fifth graders were able to attend the annual Naturalization Ceremony at Pinckney Plantation. The students witnessed 125 people from 48 countries take The Oath of Citizenship to become citizens of The United States of America. The Citadel Color Guard presented the colors, the Wando High School men's choir sang patriotic songs, and our very own Tao Rocha led everyone in the Pledge of Allegiance. We were all reminded of the history of the hundreds of thousands of men and women who landed on our shores with the hope of religious freedom and the chance to build a new life. The promise of freedom is still just as rich and true today and we were honored to be a part of seeing so many from around the world receive that promise as their own.

2nd Graders Enjoy History Lesson At Fort Moultrie
Written by PCA Mom Amy Wheeler
Our second grade class had the privilege of touring Charleston's own Fort Moultrie and the Sullivan's Island Lighthouse last Friday. The morning began with the students gathering on the main entrance of the Fort Moultrie Visitor Center to be reminded of the symbol of our Freedom, our United States Flag. In addition, special measures were taken to ensure the flag was properly unwrapped and secured firmly by our students before being hoisted on the flagpole. As the flag was being raised into the beautiful blue, palmetto skies, our students took a moment of silence, with hands on hearts, to show their respect, while our own Lily Huffines led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.
The children then observed a short film on the history of Fort Moultrie and the function and purpose of it during the American Revolutionary War leading up to the Civil War. The students spent time touring the actual fort, climbing up and down the bunkers, exploring the secret underground passageways and hidden tunnels. Creative imagination was sparked on the sacred ground of this historical site!
After enjoying a picnic lunch, we loaded up the students to Station 18 1/2 on Sullivan's Island. The students recently finished reading the book Keep the Lights Burning, Abbie, a historical fiction based on the true story of a young girl, Abbie Burgess, who bore the responsibility of taking care of the lighthouse in the absence of her father, all the while tending to her sick mother and small siblings. What a treat to experience seeing an actual lighthouse after learning about them in class. With sun block and flip flops in tow, the children spread out on their beach blankets and sketched their own depiction of the Sullivan's Island Lighthouse using white chalk and black construction paper. Before heading back to school, the students enjoyed playing in the sand and soaking up a little more sunshine. It was truly a delightful day, with infectious energy...I mean who doesn't enjoy a field trip to the beach!

Faith In Action: Providing Quilts For Children In Foster Care
Have you ever had a special blanket that was "just yours"? Most children in foster care don't have their own clothes, much less something as comforting and sentimental as their own blanket.
Jody Ragsdale is leading an effort to give these precious children something to call their own. ECBC will be hosting workshops for experienced as well as novice seamstresses to craft quilts to bless a child in need. The first workshop will be Tuesday, September 27th from 2:30 pm to 5:30 pm in the Annex.
