PCA Alumni Doing Mission Work And Language Study In The Canary Islands Off The Coast Of Spain
Written by PCA High School Spanish Teacher Mitzi Loudin
In Mathew 28:19, we are given the command to go out and make disciples of all nations.  Lindsay Tuck, Alumni of PCA, Class of 2013, is doing just that in the Canary Islands off the coast of Spain.  As a student at PCA, Lindsay excelled in Spanish and has continued to advance her skills to become a fluent Spanish speaker.  Since her time at PCA, she has served in missions work with Camp Brittney in Costa Rica and is now on a study/missions trip through Liberty University.  Lindsay and I have maintained a close relationship and get together for lunch or coffee in which we only speak Spanish during our visits together.  She has been sending out updates and pictures of her travels and shares how she is encouraging the faith of new believers.  Here is an excerpt from one of her letters to friends and family; "In my heart, He is teaching me how He is relevant in every area of life. He is showing me that He and He alone is the HOPE of this world.
Please pray for me as I pray for you, knowing that we have been entrusted with the honor of sharing this HOPE."
Recently, my Spanish 4 students wrote her in Spanish to share in her happiness as her friends come to know the Lord and encourage her to continue her work.  We pray she has a safe journey home!

Puppet Show "Obra de Marionetas" Presented To K5
Spanish 4 students recently composed their own version of "Little Red Riding Hood" in Spanish using complex structures in the past tense.  They created their own set and puppets which they used to present to the lower school students. They also led them in a popular Christian children's song in Spanish, "Quien es el rey de la selva".  They did a "magnifico" job!
The Palmetto Show Features Incredible Artistic Talents
Written by PCA Mom Jan Hogan
Photography by PCA Dad Bill Hogan
Thursday night's Palmetto Show was a feast for the senses!  Beautiful artwork by Middle and High School students, as well as Jonathan Green, inspired paintings by 4th graders and printmaking pieces by the 5th grade. Each piece of artwork was displayed and filled the hallways surrounding the Sanctuary.  It was wonderful to see the incredible gifts and talents God has blessed our students with and was so clear that these gifts are being masterfully developed and encouraged by our dedicated Fine Arts teachers!

The music program included many enjoyable performances by our amazingly talented choirs (6th Grade, Middle School, High School and Eighth Grade Ladies Ensemble) and the skilled Middle School Band.  Sixth grader Maggie O'Hanley delighted the audience with a solo vocal performance of "Tomorrow" from Annie and Samuel Biggerstaff played "Polonaisse in g minor" in a delightful piano solo. Olivia Seitz treated everyone in attendance to a catchy xylophone solo entitled "Xylophone Rag".  To top off the night (and gear up for Summer) the High School Choir performed two lively, choreographed pieces: "Under the Boardwalk" and "Surfin' USA" barefoot and in full beach attire! It was nice to see the students having so much fun together as they sang and danced to these oldies but goodies!  Performing makes deep connections and brings hearts together.

As printed in the program for the evening, "The PCA Fine Arts Department seeks to teach students about the beauty that God has created.  Through the study and display of Visual Art, Music and Drama we strive to glorify God in a way that mere words cannot express.  With every stroke of the brush, every beat of the drum, every note that is sung, may Jesus Christ be praised!"  He was surely glorified Thursday night as we celebrated the blessings of art and music!  Thank you to everyone who worked hard to make the night such a success.

5th Graders Travel Back In Time To Williamsburg
Written by PCA Mom Cassy Andrus
Near the dawn of day, a group of excited, but drowsy, 5th graders boarded a bus bound for Virginia. Acting as some sort of time machine, the bus landed in Richmond in the year 1775 on March 23rd.  Young feet hit the ground and walked up to St. John's Church being greeted by men dressed in period costume.  The students were ushered into the historic church to witness the democratic process of the Second Virginia Convention.  It was here, professional actors portrayed delegates, such as Thomas Jefferson, George Washington and Richard Henry Lee as they passionately discussed the fate of our new land.  The reenactment ended with Patrick Henry's "Give me liberty or give me Death" speech that is credited as having swung the vote allowing Virginia troops to fight the Revolutionary War.
The next day, students traveled even further into the past of our country's history to the year 1607 near the site of Jamestown, the first successful English settlement of North America.  Students climbed aboard replicas of the original settler's ships, the Susan Constant, Godspeed and the Discovery. They also were led through a recreation of the James Fort from 1610 to 1614.  There, the students heard the shots of a musket, felt the weight of the men's armor, realized the convenience of a pulley for hard work, and saw the living arrangements of the early settlers.  Next, students toured the gallery exhibits that described the cultures of the Powhatan Indians, Europeans and Africans that co-existed in 17th century Virginia.  Lastly, the students explored a life-size recreation of a Powhatan village.
But the day wasn't over yet!  In the spirit of the hard working colonists, the 5th graders marched on to Colonial Williamsburg.  Colonial Williamsburg is a 301-acre living history museum.  The Historical Area includes buildings from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries and is an interpretation of a colonial American city.  Tour guides escorted the students to the Peyton Randolph House, one of the oldest surviving buildings dating back to 1715. Next, they revisited how important the pulley system was to tasks by retrieving a bucket of water from a well. During students' stroll through town, an occasional stop was made to the local tradesmen such as the cooper (a bucket/barrel maker), the blacksmith and public armoury, silvermaker, wigmaker, and milliner (a seamstress hand-sewing accessories).  One of the highlights of the trip was visiting the Courthouse where PCA dad, Jimmy Kaiser, was put on trial for stealing a coffee pot and was found guilty!  Obviously, our next trip was to the jailhouse. All was not lost, however. Mr. Kaiser was shown mercy and released to join the class for dinner at King's Tavern.  Once dinner had settled, students were treated to an interactive presentation of African American musical culture. Dressed in garments from the 18th century, reenactors taught the students how music told stories of a slave's life on a plantation through rhythms, songs and dances.
Onward to the final day, students visited Thomas Jefferson's personal home known as Monticello, or "small mountain" in Italian. The student's learned more of Jefferson's personal life in addition to his greatest accomplishments.  Jefferson was quoted in the year 1787 as saying, "I am as happy no where else and in no other society, and all my wishes end, where I hope my days will end, at Monticello..."  Indeed, it was Jefferson's wish to have his tombstone reflect the things he had given to the people.  Therefore, when Jefferson passed at the age of 83 years on July 4th, 1826 he was buried at Monticello and his epitaph reads: "...Author of the Declaration of Independence, of the Statute of Virginia for Religious Freedom, and Father of the University of Virginia..."
At last, the 5th grade time machine returned safely to the year 2016 in Mount Pleasant, SC.  Parents were hugging their children upon appearance. Undoubtedly, asking how their adventure went. Also, what did they take away from the experience?  Hopefully, the modern day students felt the dreams, struggles, and fears of early settlers and patriots, and learned to appreciate the challenges of daily life as preparing for a revolution.  But, then again, there are also the forever memories of Golden Corral cotton candy, Michie Tavern's fried chicken, a bus ride full of giggles, late nights and early mornings with friends, and Mrs. Lamar on her scooter.
A special thanks to 5th grade teachers, Mrs. Boling, Mrs. Lamar and Mrs. Moser, for all their coordinating efforts to pull off, yet another, fun-filled annual Williamsburg Trip.  Until next year!

Kindergartners Learn Valuable Ecology Lessons At The Beach
Written by PCA Mom Christie Romine
The Kindergartners enjoyed a beautiful (and chilly) field trip to the beach at Fort Moultrie on Friday.  Our adventure guide taught our budding ecologists about things like barrier island formation, the functions of sand dunes, beach ecology, and about our beloved loggerhead sea turtles.  We learned fascinating facts about lots of living and non-living things around the island and how they interact and work together. We were all reminded why we need to care for our wildlife when we visit our beaches, as the things we leave behind can have a significant impact on our ocean and marine life. The kiddos finished the day by enjoying the sunshine, picnic lunches, and soccer on the beach.  We are so fortunate to live in such a beautiful area where our students are able to see and learn first hand about our beautiful lowcountry islands and ecosystem.

Here is what a few of them had to say about their day at the beach:

Will Terry liked "seeing the cannons at Fort Moultrie, swimming in the "mudpit", and playing with the bubbles on the beach."

Louisa Moore loved "seeing the horseshoe crabs and getting dirty."

Finn Rodenberg enjoyed "getting to play soccer on the beach with his friends."

Anna-Grace Works enjoyed learning "about the ocean, the sea creatures, and how during turtle season the turtles get distracted by the lights instead of the moon."

Preschool Press: 4K Students Learn The Wonders Of Water!
Written by PCA Preschool Director Sharon Basha
As the Preschool enters its last week of school, students are continuing to learn in unique and fun ways.
Today our 4-year-old students and their teachers jumped in with bare feet to discover the many wonders of water. The students traveled to five different learning stations.  First they traveled to an ICE station where they watched a solid ice turn into a liquid, next, they made boats that would float in water.  Of course, there was plenty of fun mixed in with the learning as students played in sprinklers and tossed water balloons.
Finally, a "water"melon station was a refreshing way to end our preschool day! Thank you to all the parents that donated items to make this day so much fun. Also a special thank you to our teachers for their hard work in planning a educational fun filled day!

Varsity Girls Soccer Team Wins Region; Heading To State
Written by PCA Athletic Director Dale Hoover
A short-handed PCA girls soccer team traveled to Myrtle Beach for a match last Tuesday against Christian Academy.
While the girls put in a valiant effort, they could not overcome playing without 5 of their top players who also run track and stayed behind to prepare for the State Track Meet held last Saturday.  Despite losing 8-0 on Tuesday, the girls team won their region and has made the state playoffs!  The Lady Eagles will be taking on Oakbrook Prep in Spartanburg tomorrow afternoon with a 5 pm kickoff.

College Recruiting Leader To Visit PCA Campus
Written by Athletic Director Dale Hoover
The PCA Athletic Department is proud to announce that we have scheduled a presentation by NCSA recruiting service on May 17th at 6 pm in The Annex!
Mike Dunlevy, the Director of Regional Recruiting/National College Scout, will be on hand to instruct our athletes about the changing landscape of college athletic recruiting.  Mike was a coach/recruiter on the college level for 28 years at the Division I, II, and III levels and will give some insight into how our athletes can get noticed for their athletic performances in hopes of playing at the next level.  He will also create an online profile for those that desire to take that step. The meeting and profile are free of charge.  Several of our athletes have used this company in the past and we have a few with NCSA profiles online right now.  NCSA had 20,000 college commits out of their program last year.
If your child is a rising 7th - 12th grader and is interested in possibly playing college athletics, you are highly encouraged to bring them and attend this informative meeting!  GO EAGLES!
On-Site Cardiovascular Testing Available For PCA Athletes
The PCA Athletic Department is excited to announce that we will be partnering with Wimbledon Athletics to make on-site cardiovascular testing available for our students. Diagnostic testing can detect underlying vascular conditions, such as blood clots, and unsuspected cardiac abnormalities that could cause sudden cardiac arrest, and we are making it possible for you to take the important step to test for these potentially life-threatening conditions.  These tests are designed to reduce the risk of athletes succumbing to a heart condition that is unlikely to be detected during a regular athletic physical.
An e-mail will be sent to all rising 6th - 12th grade parents with more information describing the process involved in scheduling your student for testing.  Wimbledon testing will be done on campus from 3 pm - 9:15 pm on Friday, May 13th and from 9 am - 4:30 pm on Saturday, May 14th in the Annex.
