US 31 fully opens in Westfield today, Oct. 22

Today, Oct. 22, crews plan to shift traffic on US 31 in Westfield to the final traffic configuration. By tomorrow, Oct. 23, all lanes on US 31 in Westfield should be open.

The Westfield stretch of US 31 is now three lanes in each direction between 146th Street and SR 32 and two lanes from SR 32 to SR 38. Motorists are only able to access the new freeway through entrance and exit ramps, all of which are now open.

The speed limit on US 31 in Westfield will remain 40 mph as crews complete final work on the contract. INDOT and law enforcement are working together to determine the safest time to adjust the speed limit to the final 55 mph zone. The public will be notified via e-newsletter when this speed limit changes.

City of Westfield Mayor Andy Cook and INDOT Commissioner Brandye Hendrickson "trash" a traffic signal in celebration of the removal of traffic signals along the new US 31 freeway.

"Upgrading US 31 to freeway standards has helped open the door for Westfield to compete for national economic development projects," explains Mayor Andy Cook. "The US 31 freeway has brought Westfield about 15 minutes closer to Indianapolis and the Indianapolis International Airport. Combine that with development projects like Grand Park, and now our family-focused community is being recognized as one of the best places to raise a family."

Westfield's 400-acre Grand Park had nearly 1.4 million visits this year and booked more than 55,000 hotel rooms in central Indiana. The US 31 upgrade has assisted Grand Park's goal in creating an unforgettable experience for visitors. Projects like the US 31 freeway and Grand Park contribute to Westfield's nearly 10 percent increase in assessed value in 2015.
