Traffic shift between 169th Street and SR 38 on or after Saturday, Jan. 17
On or after Saturday, Jan. 17, crews plan to shift traffic on US 31 between 169th Street and SR 38 to the west side of the roadway. Motorists should note the following configuration changes after this traffic shift (see map illustration below):
  • Two lanes of traffic will be open on northbound and southbound US 31 between 169th Street and SR 32.
  • One lane of traffic will be open on northbound and southbound US 31 between SR 32 and SR 38.
  • 169th Street: The existing traffic signal will be removed, and motorists will no longer have direct access to/from US 31 at this location. East/west traffic will be maintained underneath the new US 31 bridge.
  • SR 32: A new signalized interchange configuration will be in place, providing direct access to/from US 31. *See details and map at bottom of enewsletter.
  • 181st Street: The existing traffic signal will be removed, and motorists will no longer have direct access to/from US 31 at this location. East/west traffic will be maintained underneath the new US 31 bridge.
  • 191st Street: Closed at US 31 with no direct access to/from or across US 31 at this location until the new US 31/191st Street interchange is complete later this year.
  • 196th Street: Access to/from US 31 remains available via a temporary signal. Upon completion of the US 31 project in late 2015, 196th Street will become a cul-de-sac with no direct access to/from US 31.

New interchange configuration, restrictions at US 31/SR 32 on or after Saturday, Jan. 17
On or after Saturday, Jan. 17, motorists will not have access to/from US 31 at SR 32 while crews finalize the traffic shift (noted above). During the shift, traffic will be maintained on northbound and southbound US 31, as well as on eastbound and westbound SR 32. Additional restrictions on US 31 or SR 32 may be necessary until the traffic shift is complete (crews anticipate one day). Direct access to/from US 31 will remain available at 161st Street and 196th Street.

Once the traffic shift is complete, the existing traffic signal at US 31/SR 32 will be removed and traffic on US 31 will travel above SR 32. The new US 31/SR 32 area will operate as a single-point urban interchange, providing direct access to/from US 31 with a single traffic signal span underneath the new US 31 bridge over SR 32. For reference, motorists may be familiar with the single-point urban interchange located at I-465/Allisonville Road. Construction will continue in the US 31/SR 32 area through 2015.
