Pets & Their People
Scruffy- A diamond in the rough!
By Trudy Mayers
| Before |
I work at a chemical plant and for over a year I kept noticing a scruffy little dog that would hang out in the woods and on the road nearby. He was very matted and and wouldn't let anyone get near him although several people from other work sites would stop and throw food over the fence to him. I asked colleagues to save their scraps of food and began feeding him, but he wouldn't let me get close to him. He was very wary of strangers as unfortunately he had been chased and had rocks thrown at him. Sadly, he had reason to be scared.
I told everyone that I was going to save him, although they all thought I was crazy! Colleagues said that he was a mutt that was probably sick and full of worms, but I didn't listen to them. I even told the little dog that I was going to save him one day. Finally a friend at work helped me trap him and after he was checked out at the vet I found out that he was microchipped!
 |
After |
The vet contacted his previous owners who said that he was a Chinese Crested Powder Puff. They said that he was stolen as a puppy and they didn't want him back. I was thrilled that I was able to keep him! After a clean bill of health from the vet I picked him up the next day. He was so friendly and the staff told me that he was giving sloppy wet kisses to everyone. He has been the sweetest dog from day one, and I am so glad that I was able to save him and give him a second chance.
It has been almost 3 years since I rescued Scruffy and my work colleagues frequently ask me how he's doing. No one can believe that the scraggly mutt was a diamond in the rough! |
| Dog Dinner | Pet Product Pick
-Merrick Thanksgiving Feast
In this section we will give our candid opinion as pet professionals regarding new and existing pet related products on the market. We do not sell, endorse or profit from the sale of these products in any way. We provide these reviews as a service to our readers and their furry companions. Please feel free to let us know if you agree or disagree with our assessments by sharing your pets' reaction by email or Facebook.
We had to feature these Merrick brand pet foods as our product pick for November as they offer a perfect alternative to your Thanksgiving feast table scraps. Although it is tempting to give your pup or kitty part of your Thanksgiving dinner, human food and diet changes are hazardous to your pets' digestive system and can lead to vomiting, diarrhea, and in severe cases, pancreatitis.
But don't worry, you can still chow down on turkey and gravy without feeling guilty for not sharing your scrumptious scraps as your pet glares pleadingly at you!
| Cat Dinner |
Not only does Merrick make quality pet food with natural ingredients, they also make a pet Thanksgiving Day dinner complete with de-boned turkey, turkey broth, sweet potatoes, carrots, green beans and granny smith apples!
Merrick foods can be purchased online or locally at Adventure Pets in Mandeville or Good Dog Naturally in Covington. |
Adorable Adoptables
These two precious boys were found in the woods by Outback Steakhouse in Covington. They are beautiful, sweet and adorable. They are approximately 3-4 months old. The Siamese is very friendly and will crawl up your leg if you let him. The orange kitten purrs like crazy and is very playful. He attacks pencils and his brother! Both are great with other cats and dogs.
To adopt either of these sweet cats please contact Deenie at 504 236-3389.
Please inform us of adoptable or lost/found pets in our local community and we will post them in our monthly newsletter. Please include a photo. willowsoak@bellsouth.net
