Hello All,

Welcome to the 4th Issue of Heads Up! There are some significant happenings on the Alexander Technique front that I am excited to be able to share with you:

LEAF LOGOA new study about pain and the Alexander Technique has recently been published, with significant findings in favor of the technique's efficacy for relieving pain. If you are seeking a solution for your pain, I urge you to take a look at the results of this study and consider a course of Alexander Technique lessons this fall, before the winter weather sets in.

October 8th - 14th is International Alexander (Technique) Awareness Week (IAAW). Each year in October, Alexander teachers belonging to the American Society for the Alexander Technique (AmSAT - www.amsatonline.org) join with colleagues worldwide to offer the public various opportunities to make the Alexander Technique more accessible. In honor of this week, AmSAT has unveiled a clever new short video about the technique that can be easily shared on social media.

Also in honor of IAAW, I am offering special discounts on lessons through October 31st. If you have had lessons in the past and would like to refresh your skills, or if you are considering trying lessons for the first time, or if you are already currently a student, this offer is for you. It is my own personal way of participating in IAAW to help make this brilliant technique as accessible as possible.

As always, I welcome your thoughts, questions and feedback. Enjoy!

Taking Charge, Choosing a New Direction: A Service Evaluation of Alexander Technique Lessons for Pain Clinic Patients (SEAT): an Approach to Pain Management   McClean, S. and Wye, L. (June 2012) Project Report. UWE Bristol, Bristol.

A high quality clinical trial carried out in an experimental setting has demonstrated the therapeutic value and effectiveness of Alexander Technique (AT) lessons for chronic pain. The study focused on a group of 43 patients with chronic or recurrent pain, 75% of which had back pain. The findings suggest that lessons in the AT are feasible, acceptable and beneficial in terms of improving quality of life and patients' management of pain. Each patient was given six consecutive weekly one-to-one lessons by a qualified Alexander Technique instructor. Greatest changes were found in how the patients/students managed their pain (more than half stopped or reduced their medication) and the impact that the pain had on their daily lives. This also led to some behavioural changes and changes in awareness and self-knowledge on the part of the patients/students. These attitudinal and behavioural changes may explain the finding that students of the AT appeared to reduce their pain related NHS costs by half.
