Green Hotel Certifications in Greater Boston
The Tripadvisor GreenLeader certification is clearly the leading green hotel certification, as you can see in the chart below. The number of GreenLeader hotels in Greater Boston grew from 41 last year to 52 now: 6 platinum, 7 gold, 21 silver and 18 bronze.
In Boston proper, 23 of 82 hotels are TripAdvisor GreenLeaders, and 24 other properties report that they meet the minimum GreenLeaders' criteria.
Congratulations to Mandarin Oriental Boston and Taj Boston for joining the platinum club! I also congratulate Hostelling International Boston for becoming the area's second LEED certified hotel! Please contact me if you want my advice (free) about achieving any green certification.

Eversource has an extraordinary promotion: hotels can acquire the following energy-saving products, with a combined value of $106, for only $8 together:
- the Merlin X1, 9-watt, 480 lumen RemPhos LED table lamp. This lamp is dimmable and has a USB port.
the Embertec Emberstrip® AV+, which is an advanced power strip. This product senses when electronics (TV's, PC's, game consoles, etc.) aren't in use and powers them down. A 3-minute video about this product is here. Also, see the article below, Restrain Rising Plug Loads.
Sheraton Boston took advantage of this offer for their 1200 guest rooms.
This promotion will end December 31.
This is the centennial year of the National Park Service. Three organizations (Pew Charitable Trusts, National Parks Conservation Association and National Trust for Historical Preservation) are leading a campaign for long-term sustainable funding solutions for U.S. National Parks. They're pushing for action by Congress this year.
Every year, the 19 national parks in MA attract thousands of out-of-state visitors and millions of dollars to our hospitality industry.
The delayed maintenance backlog for national parks in Boston is $135 million; in MA it's $228 million; and it's $12 billion nationwide.
If your hotel supports this campaign, join 800 U.S. organizations and Mayor Walsh by signing this letter. You may forward this message to anyone who might be interested.
The 9th Annual Boston GreenFest will unfold at Boston City Hall Plaza, Faneuil Hall and Sam Adams Park on Friday-Sunday, August 19-21 (noon to 10:00 on Friday and Saturday, Noon to 6:00 on Sunday). This unique event is great for hotel staff and guests alike. It features exhibits, forums and films about innovative, eco-friendly technologies and techniques.
See the Taj Boston Hotel exhibit that showcases their green initiatives. The hotel will also participate in the forum, "Our Water: Good to the Last Drop?" on Friday, 1:00 - 3:00, at Faneuil Hall.
GreenFest offers the opportunity to test-drive an electric vehicle, and it features three stages with multicultural music, dance, fashion and more.

Restrain Rising Plug Loads: These loads pose different challenges than central energy loads Buildings.com website
The number of plugged-in devices is increasing. So is the proportion of building energy use associated with plug loads. This article provides tools and techniques to roll back these loads.
Some of its recommendations:
-
Designate a plug load champion who can focus on plug-use energy reduction.
-
Establish procurement policies and goals to reduce plug loads.
- Root out unnecessary and inefficient equipment.
- Use submeters to gather information that enables plug loads to be managed.
- Keep reports on plug load energy use trends.
The author also touts advanced power strips--devices that both meter energy and control it. Some, like the Embertec Emberstrip mentioned above, control electronic devices using occupancy sensors or preset schedules. The meters help identify energy hogs.
World's Largest Food Distributor Commits to Source 100% Cage-Free Eggs Lorraine Chow, EcoWatch, June 21 Massachusetts Minimum Size Requirements for Farm Animal Containment, Question 3 (2016) Ballotpedia website
Sysco Corp, the world's largest foodservice distributor, will source only cage-free eggs in the U.S. by 2026. They collaborated with The Humane League on this effort. Sysco is such a large company that their policy will have a profound impact on the nation's egg industry.
Massachusetts might run ahead of the crowd on this issue. Ballot Question 3, which will be decided by voters on November 8, calls for, "prohibiting the sale of eggs, veal, or pork of a farm animal confined in a cruel manner." Cruel manner is defined here as, "confined so as to prevent a covered animal from lying down, standing up, fully extending the animal's limbs, or turning around freely."
