U.S. Department of Energy's Better Buildings Website

HEI, a group of 40+ upscale and luxury hotels, is a 4-time ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year. Their Fab Four Energy Buddies program optimizes their energy efficiency operations and maintenance program, and engages their staff.

Thus far, the program has cut energy bills by 5% annually.

The Fab Four for each property consists of these department heads: engineering, housekeeping, kitchen and banquets. They're charged with:
  • developing energy efficiency plans in their own departments and for the hotel;
  • completing their weekly energy checklist;
  • managing an Energy Buddy in their department who assures that the daily energy checklists are completed.

Here is the Fab Four and Energy Buddies' Energy Checklist

The Fab Four and the Energy Buddies from each property compete against their counterparts in other HEI hotels for the best energy performance improvement. Prizes are awarded semi-annually.

Water bottle filling stations eliminate the need to buy and store plastic water bottles--saving time and money.

Some hotels even make money by selling reusable bottles to guests. Many guests prefer bottles that don't contain the chemical BPA.

Three companies make filling stations--and each has several variations. Common placements are in the lobby, on each floor, in exercise rooms and in the staff cafeteria.
