Dear Boston Green Tourism Members,
In the last newsletter, I noted that one of the speakers had to cancel. Dan Cook of Conservation Solutions Corporation will replace him. Mr. Cook will discuss a plant-based water treatment solution for pools and other applications that improves water quality and reduces chlorine use while cutting energy and water bills.
I hope you can come to the meeting!
Dan

T5 LED Replacements Now Available for $5
|

T5 linear fluorescent bulbs are commonly used with hotel bathroom mirrors. Now there is an LED replacement bulb made by RemPhos that cuts their energy use in half.
The RemPhos LED's qualify for an upstream incentive, which enables businesses to buy them for $5 each from approved Mass Save participating distributors. That's about half the cost of comparable fluorescents. The LED's last 50,000 hours. RemPhos provides a five-year warranty.
The ROI for the replacement bulbs is under one year, according to Kevin Lubinger of Eversource. If you have questions, contact Mr. Lubinger (Kevin.Lubinger@eversource.com).

Daily Table Provides Free Pickup of Surplus Food from Hotels
Daily Table, a non-profit grocery store in Dorchester, recently picked up yogurt, eggs and other food from InterContinental Boston after a convention. By working with Daily Table, IC Boston avoided the cost of food disposal and provided healthy food for low-income residents.
Daily Table is a not-for-profit retail food market in Dorchester that brings inexpensive and nutritious prepared meals and groceries to economically-challenged communities. It was founded by Doug Rauch, former President of Trader Joe's. The store secures most of its food from growers, supermarkets, manufacturers and distributors who donate their surplus food or provide it at a deep discount.
In this way, Daily Table keeps its food priced so low that they are comparable to fast food alternatives in the neighborhood.
Daily Table has a full-time truck with drivers that pick up food for free anywhere in the city.
If your property has excess unprepared food that Daily Table might use, call Daily Table's Executive Director Rudy Rubenis (781-248-9476). Mr. Rubenis will determine whether the donation is appropriate and arrange for a free pickup.
Correction: Better Link for Ecovim Food Waste Dehydrator
In the November 3 newsletter, I linked to an outdated website for the Ecovim food waste dehydrator. Use this link instead. The Ecovim machine is used by Taj Boston and among other businesses.

Health Care Without Harm, October 2015 This 7-page white paper was written for hospitals, but it can help any food service that wants to offer its customers safe, environmentally-friendly seafood. It provides five principles for purchasing seafood, and explains current issues, such as domestic vs. imported; farmed vs. wild; nutritional benefits and concerns; and the pro's and cons of third party certifications and guidelines.
Dan Probst, Facility Executive, December 8
Commercial buildings are getting smarter. This article describes why this trend will accelerate.
The author explains that, compared to several years ago, it has become easier and cheaper to retrofit older buildings with smart building systems and management tools.
Smarter buildings have important advantages. By "combining wireless monitoring with predictive analytics, smart building management software boosts facility performance with constant commissioning and data driven decision-making." Lower energy bills and increased comfort ensue.
