NEWS
In July, Tesla installed two electric vehicle charging stations at the Millennium Bostonian Hotel: a "Tesla Supercharger" which charges Tesla vehicles, and a ClipperCreek charging station that charges most other EV's. Tesla paid the entire $6,000 equipment and installation cost.

Tesla has already installed stations at W Boston, Four Seasons Boston and Sheraton Boston.

"Tesla partners with hotels, resorts, and restaurants...to offer High Power Connectors as an amenity for visitors, allowing them to charge their Tesla Model S at locations where they want to stay for several hours." Tesla drivers use apps that direct them to nearby charging stations. Tesla's Millennium Bostonian page is here. More information about Tesla's "destination charging stations" is here

Albert Tsaturyan, Director of Engineering at the Millennium said that five guests used the charging stations during the two weeks following installation. The electricity is free for drivers. Non-guests pay the hotel a parking fee, while guests can have their parking fee waived.

EV owners leave their keys with the hotel, so their cars can be re-parked when fully charged.

Mr. Tsaturyan noted that the charging stations attract guests to the hotel and its restaurant; and it gives them points toward a higher TripAdvisor GreenLeaders rating.

EnerLogic released a summary of Langham Boston's recent window film
project. Solar window film was applied to windows on three sides of  the building's top three floors to keep the rooms more comfortable and reduce air conditioning costs.

Fred Mahoney, the hotel's Director of Engineering, said the installation looks great, the guest feedback has been positive and energy savings are impressive. Including the 25% Mass Save incentive, the project ROI is predicted to be 1.6 years.

IDEAS
Green Certifications Earned by Boston Area Hotels
The chart below lists the certifications for Boston area hotels, as of August 10.

My observations:
  • 55 Boston hotels have at least one green certification, up from 51 last year. 17 hotels have two certifications, 4 facilities have three and two have four.
  • The most popular certification is TripAdvisor. 41 hotels have earned the TripAdvisor GreenLeader certification, up from 33 last year. It was the only certification that became more popular this year.
  • Four hotels were recognized by the Boston-only Challenge for Sustainability: The Colonnade, Marriott Copley Place, Sheraton Boston and Seaport.

LeanPath Introduces New Food Waste Reduction Product for Restaurants
LeanPath helps businesses track and analyze their pre-consumer food waste. Businesses that use their system have cut their food waste by as much as 50% and their food purchases by 2% - 6%. The original LeanPath 360 product, described at a 2013 BGT meeting, was purchased mostly by major institutions like universities and hospitals.

LeanPath recently introduced "Zap," a similar product designed and priced for small and mid-size restaurants.

In both systems, staff record what's being thrown away and why on a tablet computer. The food waste tracking software compiles this information online so Leanpath can provide their clients with weekly, actionable reports.

Zap's "Basic" system is priced at $69 per month, and includes training and technical support for the term of the contract term usually 1 or 2 years. Leanpath 360 costs $349 to $749 per month, depending on the package, for a 2 to 3 year contract.

Which Leanpath product is more suitable for your hotel--360 or Zap? It depends on your kitchen's size and complexity. Interested businesses should contact Leanpath to find out.
