Boston Approves Energy Reporting and Disclosure Ordinance for Commercial Buildings

Boston City Council approved an ordinance that will require commercial buildings to disclose their Energy Star Portfolio Manager score and water use. The City will post this information online. I reported on this ordinance earlier, when it was a proposal. It will take effect in 2014 for buildings over 50,000 square feet.

The City's Air Pollution Control Commission will determine the criteria that specify which buildings will be required to get an ASHRAE-based audit every five years. It apears likely that some buildings will be exempt--those with a Portfolio Manager score of 75 or higher, and ones that have demonstrated significant improvement.

Fines for non-compliance will range from $75 to $200 per day, with an annual limit of $3,000.

I recommend that hoteliers read the City's website that summarizes the ordinance (above), and skim the complete ordinance.

Please contact me if you want my free help with boosting your facility's Energy Star score. I have made many presentations to hoteliers and enginers on how U.S. hotels reduce their energy use.
