Greeting

Dear Friends,

After nearly two and a half years of service to the 7th District, Viviana Martinez has been offered and accepted a new position in the Office of President Toni Preckwinkle, as Assistant Special Legal Counsel.

I want to express my gratitude to Viviana for her outstanding service to the residents of the 7th District during her tenure as my chief of staff. During this time we introduced significant legislation that was approved by the county board, balanced the county budget during a difficult time, brought transparency and accountability to county government, and established a full-time district service office responsive to citizens' needs.

My staff and I wish Viviana much success and happiness in her new endeavors.

And, we welcome Adriana Moreno Nevárez as our new chief of staff.

Below you will find legislative and community updates. And, as always, if you have any questions, suggestions or concerns, do not hesitate to contact my office.

Sincerely,

Jesús "Chuy" García

Public Safety Efforts
On Monday, April 1st, I stood with Cook County President Toni Preckwinkle, Cook County Commissioners Butler and Steele, victims of gun violence, faith-based leaders, and gun safety advocates on the first day of Cook County's new firearms tax implementation. Effective immediately, a $25 tax will be charged on all firearm purchases made within Cook County. The revenue raised from this new tax will help fund the Cook County Health and Hospitals System which often treats those very victims of gun violence.

Anti-Violence Efforts Continue

Many of us agree that it will take more than legislation to cure the epidemic of violence that is plaguing our communities.  During National Poetry Month, I organized an anti-violence tour to bring healing and support to some of Cook County's often forgotten population: the youth at Cook County's Juvenile Temporary Detention Center and the women in the Sheriff's Justice Program at Cook County jail.

Our anti-violence tour included an Anti-Violence Townhall Meeting at A Safe Haven and peace talks with students in Pilsen and Little Village, organized by UIC's Social Justice Initiative, and it culminated with internationally acclaimed poet Aja Monet delivering the invocation at the April 17th meeting of the Cook County Board of

 Commissioners.

Many thanks to reknown poets Aja Monet, Reggie Eldridge, Ayinde Cartmanand our very own Luis Tubens for their ongoing efforts to promote peace and social justice through the arts.

A proud sponsor of the Omega

Let's follow the First Lady's

example and Let's Move! Winter has kept us cooped up too long and it's time to come out and

play.
