Flagler awarded Rapid Re-Housing Certification

The National Alliance to End Homelessness has named the Villa's Flagler Housing & Homeless Services as one of three certified rapid re-housing providers in the nation. The certification is assessed by proficiency in all rapid re-housing activities, meeting outcome standards, program orientation, and program policies.  Flagler completed the transition to a full rapid re-housing model in 2013.

Flagler helps homeless families, individuals and veterans in the Richmond and Tri-Cities areas obtain permanent housing as quickly as possible through support services.  We will serve 300 families -- approximately 800 individuals -- this year.  Click here to learn more about the program.

The Alliance also recently published a blog post about Flagler's Council on Accreditation Innovative Practices Award for its successful transition.  Read the post here.

CATS2Career and Transition Services students tour University of Richmond

CATS students at UR
Villa CATS students at the
University of Richmond
Our CATS students benefit from hands-on learning opportunities every day, both on and off the Villa campus as they prepare to transition into the next phase of their lives.  Last month, they were opened to the possibilities of college as they took a guided tour of the University of Richmond.  After some Q&A with UR faculty and students, lunch in the dining hall and a walk through the university museum, our students felt that a whole new world had been opened to them.  Many thanks to the University of Richmond for generously hosting our students!

You too can help Villa students as they continue their education and begin to enter the workforce. Contact Stephanie Margolin at 804-200-1601 or email to learn about Villa Pros, our new career mentoring program.  We're seeking motivated professionals to make a difference in the lives of young adults through one-on-one and group mentoring. Your knowledge and guidance will go a long way in helping our students build brighter futures.
SOHVilla responds to CDC report of 30% increase
in children with autism

According to a new report by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 1 in 68 U.S. children has an autism spectrum disorder -- up from 1 in 88 in 2012.  Autism continues to be much more common in boys (1 in 42) than girls (1 in 189).

Early Autism Services treats children ages 2 to 5
The report also points out that, while autism can be diagnosed as early as age 2, the average age for diagnosis is age 4. Children with autism can see greater benefits to IQ and overall functioning with early treatment, which is why St. Joseph's Villa now provides Early Autism Services. Prior to the latest CDC report, we launched this program serving children ages 2 to 5 diagnosed with autism.

"The rise of autism spectrum disorder diagnoses makes early intervention more critical than ever," said Adam Dreyfus, Director of the Villa's Sarah Dooley Center for Autism.  "Treating children at the earliest possible age can make lifelong differences in social and cognitive skills that help them reach their full potential."
