Tents Needed

We are in desperate need of tents that are lightweight, which work best for transporting daily (4-person work great).

If you would like to donate tents, sleeping bags, or any other equipment, even office equipment (old but working PCs needed), please contact us at 916-448-2448 and/or come by our office, located across from Loaves & Fishes, in Friendship Park:

consecutive second Saturdays starting October 8th. The benefit showing of the first five episodes of the mini-series will be held at First United Methodist Church at 21st and 'J' Streets at 5:00pm (see below).

As we approach the critical winter weather where exposure to the elements becomes a daily threat to the well-being of many of our homeless citizens, it is an appropriate time to view these Costa Mantis films. See what the homeless within our region are facing and hear from them and other experts on the problems that are faced and what is being done in our city and county.

We will also have time at each showing for some Q & A with Costa Mantis (filmmaker) and Safe Ground leaders. Come, learn and enjoy.

I hope to see you all there.

Searching For SafeGround Film Festival Coming Soon!

Costa Mantis Films is pleased to present

a benefit for SafeGroundSac.org

It all began in tent city, Sacramento.

Forced out by politics and police, a small group of homeless people banded together - called "safeground" - to fight for the right to have a place to sleep. Thirty months later, they still have no place to go.

Award-winning filmmaker Costa Mantis tells the stories of their struggles in a compelling miniseries, Searching For Safe Ground.

Now for the first time, on 2nd Saturdays at 5:00PM beginning in October, five episodes will be presented at The Searching For SafeGround Film Festival.

  • OCT 8 - Episode 1 "Third World America"
  • NOV 12 - Episode 2 "Outside In"
  • DEC 10 - Episode 3 "Where Will I Stay Tonight?"
  • JAN 14 - Episode 4 "It Is What It Is"
  • FEB 11 - Episode 5 "Now What?"

The film festival will be hosted by the First United Methodist Church at 21st & J Streets. Admittance and suggested donation is $5. Tickets will be for sale at the door. Seating is limited so come early. Q&A afterwards with the filmmaker and SafeGround leaders.

Mayor Kevin Johnson
Mayor Kevin Johnson
Report on Our Second Annual Jubilee

By Paula Lomazzi

The Safe Ground Jubilee, held September 14 at the Cesar Chavez Park and the march, was a great success. The planning side leading up to the event was very

Wheels to Work Van, a project of Paratransit, Sacramento Housing Alliance and Women's Empowerment

rewarding in building leadership and making new friends and connections in the outreach process. And all the hard work paid off in a fantastic event. Musical performances from Pinky and the Blind Resistance, GP Bailey, Harmony, Lyrica, Wokini Singers, and Jenn Rogar were inspirational and Pinky got people dancing.

Another of the positive results of the Jubilee, you can view online at  www.youtube.com/shocpaula, where there's a video of Councilmember Jay Shenirer publicly promising that Safe Ground will have a permanent place by this winter.

From Left to Right - Rabbi Mona Alfi, Councilmember Jay Shenirer, Councilmember Angelique Ashby, and Brenda Wade
Councilmember Angelique Ashby accompanied him on stage and agreed with his promise. Mayor Kevin Johnson also spoke showing his support at the event. Though we still have many hurtles, this promise shows strong allegiances and much progress toward our vision. So many people from different walks of life attended and spoke offering support for the homeless community a

nd Safe Ground. Those that were homeless, I'm sure, were given much assurance and hope by the speakers.

We would like to thank all those that came out to share information at their organizational tables and booths, and the speakers and performers, and the many volunteers. Thank you to Food Not Bombs for serving meals to around 400 homeless people. And we would like to thank our many sponsors: Los Rios College Federation of Teachers, Loaves & Fishes, Moe Mohanna, Keystone Christian Missionary Church, Merchants National Bank, Law offices of Mark Merin, Uptown Studios, SHOC, Paratransit, Law Offices of Elizabeth Gade, Law offices of Tina A. Thomas, Communications Workers of America, Starry Band, Inc., Gary Gallery (Francis House), John & Debra Reiger, Anonymous Donation in memory of Elliot Dawkins, Peace & Freedom Party, Veterans for Peace, Sacramento Chapter of ACLU, Newman Catholic Community, St. Philomene Church, Older Woman's League.

About Us

SafeGround needs churches, synagogues, congregations, union halls and business owners in the Midtown area to permit up to 100 SafeGround homeless persons to stay overnight on their property, from 6 p.m. to 7 a.m. the next day. This would provide the SafeGround campers a sanctuary from arrest, and also give them a life-saving night free of the elements. SafeGround provides its own staffing and cleanup. Many hosts also provide a dinner and/or breakfast, but this is not required.

Those who sleep with us promise to be alcohol free, drug free and nonviolent. All we need is a large room and someone to open the doors. We provide the rest. We have been doing this for over a year with four downtown churches and they may be contacted for reference at your request. Please contact David
Moss at 916-834-2228 or
davidmoss43@gmail.com for more information if you can help.
