2012 LEONARDO START-UP PRIZE |
|
|
| |
|
Silicon Biosystems, S.p.A., was presented the Leonardo Start-up Prize for 2012 by the president of the Italian Republic, Giorgio Napolitano. The Leonardo Committee was formed in 1993 by the Italian Ministry of Economic Development, Confidustria, the Italian association of manufacturing and services companies, and the Foreign Commerce Agency to recognize entrepreneurs and individuals which have contributed significantly to a positive image of "made in Italy" and "Italian Quality." The Start-up Prize, new in 2012, was created to recognize young companies that have demonstrated innovation, international success, and have created social impact.

MOLECULAR MEDICINE
TRI-CONFERENCE IN REVIEW |

Stong Focus on CTCs
This year's Molecular Medicine Tri-Conference had an entire track dedicated to Circulating Tumor Cells. CTCs really have become a hot area in oncology clinical and translational research. Key presenters included Dan Haber from Massachusetts General Hospital, Dan Hayes from Univ Michigan, Klaus Pantel from UKE-Hamburg, and Stephanie Jeffery from Stanford to name a few. There was plenty of focus on tumor cell heterogeneity and how molecular characterization can help drive developments in clinical diagnosis and therapeutic decisions. The DEParray™ system and Ampli1™ WGA kit, combined with downstream methods like next generation sequencing and copy number variation analysis, enable the molecular characterization of individual rare cells. The importance of single cell genetic analysis in clinical oncology was demonstrated in a number of recently published articles, including: |

Circulating Breast Tumor Cells Exhibit Dynamic Changes in Epithelial and Mesenchymal Composition
Yu M, et al. Science 2013 Feb1;339:580-4
By characterizing EMT in CTCs from breast cancer patients, the authors demonstrated an enrichment of mesenchymal cells in CTCs, consistent with the importance of this cell fate in cancer dissemination. Reversible shifts between epithelial and mesenchymal cell fates correlated with response to therapy and disease progression in an index patient. These results further highlight the importance of genomic analysis of CTCs in understanding the mechanisms of tumor metastasis. ...Read More
The Implications of Clonal Genome Evolution for Cancer Medicine
Aparicio S and Caldas C; N Engl J Med 2013; 368:842-51
Advances in single cell analysis methods are enabling greater understanding of the prevalence and clinical relevance of clonal variants in tumors. This review article highlights the need to shift from bulk tumor profiling to genomic analysis of clonal subpopulations in order to recognize the promise of personalized monitoring and treatment of cancer. ...Read More
Circulating Tumor Cells as Therapy-Related Biomarkers in Cancer Patients Gorges TM and Pantel K. Cancer Immunol Immunother 2013 Jan 12
This review article highlights the importance of moving beyond enumeration of CTCs to molecular analysis, in order to investigate the potential use of these cells for monitoring disease and guiding treatment decisions. ...Read More |
