Sequestration and Its Impact on Small Businesses -

In the federal budget, the sequester or sequestration refers to across-the-board spending cuts that began on March 1, 2013 as an austerity fiscal policy. The spending reductions are expected to total about $85.4 billion during fiscal year 2013 as part of a 10-year plan to cut spending. According to a study by George Mason University in conjunction with Chmura Economics and Analytics, "If the cuts are fully implemented, more than 2 million jobs could be lost, with nearly half of those coming from small business."
In the Washington, D.C. area, where so many small businesses depend on the Federal government for its contracts - Sequestration could have a very serious impact on local companies that are doing business on a national basis. In one of the best areas for economic development in the Nation, Fairfax County, Virginia, the Fairfax County Economic Development Authority (FCEDA) (www.fceda.org) works closely with small businesses, and the president of FCEDA along with two small business owners in Fairfax County will join Josh Smith this week to discuss the impact of the sequester in their community.

Ms. Redmon is an Army Signal Corp veteran and project management professional with more than 25 years' experience in acquisition life-cycle and software development. Mr. Vargas is a marketing, public relations and management consulting executive and a former vice president at AOL and France Telecom. He served as chairman of the Dulles Regional Chamber of Commerce in Herndon, VA and is a former Air Force reconnaissance officer.
