The Friday Reflection Title
September 2, 2016
 The Martyrs of New Guinea

The Rev. Bob Woods, St. Sherrian's, Kernville

On this next Sunday, we will read stories emphasizing the need to be open to change, re-molding as was the clay in the lesson from Jeremiah. It is an easy concept now in the Kern River Valley, where 5 fires have occurred, two of which are still burning. Fire destroys, but also clears away making room for something new.

First a detour: Thank you to those churches which have responded to St. Sherrian's request for help. We have received $1,500 from other churches. We still have a long way to go, and there is still time to contribute as rebuilding awaits clean-up of the burn debris. Current estimates are that about $30-40,000 will be needed to get our two burned-out families back into their homes.

A wonderful tale of radical welcoming and sending, we shall read Paul's letter to Philemon. Paul has welcomed a runaway slave, Onesimus, and is sending him back to Philemon. To appreciate the gravity of this, consider that Paul, already a prisoner under house arrest, is harboring a runaway slave, a capital offense in Rome of his day. Despite that, he goes even further and asks Philemon to receive his slave as a child, not as a chattel. An unthinkable request in that era, indeed a call to new and better relationships.

¿QUÍEN ES MI VECINO?

¿QUÍEN ES MI VECINO?
"Who is my neighbor?"

In the last couple of issues of the Friday ReflectionBishop David has urged each Parish Family to includesome Spanish within the Liturgy in order to make ourParish Families more welcoming to individuals ofHispanic Heritage. If any of your parishes are like SaintMatthew's, I thought that would be a very difficult thingto do.   As we grow older it becomes more difficult to tryto learn a new language.   In response to Bishop David'srequest, our parish has begun with a very simple phrase in the Mass in Spanish, that we are all familiar with in English:

THE LORD BE WITH YOU.......and our response,
AND ALSO WITH YOU.

If we try to begin with small things, then we can grow into greater things. This is one way of "learning Spanish as church hospitality." We also have some Spanish language tracts along beside the tracts in English in both the Narthex and the Parish Hall.

Welcoming our neighbor is welcoming Jesus Christ into our midst.

EL SEÑOR SEA CON USTEDES.       Y CON TU ESPÍRITU.

Climate Change Series
St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Modesto

Way back in 1989, September 1st was proclaimed the World Day of Prayer for Creation by the Orthodox Church. Since then many other churches and councils - including the world wide Anglican church and the Roman Catholic Church - have joined them. Now this day of prayer has been extended to a month long Season of Creation, ending on the Feast of St. Francis, October 4th.

How appropriate that in September we at St. Paul's should be looking at, and praying about, climate change! For three Wednesdays in September - September 14th, 21st & 28th - from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm we will focus our attention on this frightening phenomenon.

Advent Calendar-New!

Orders are coming in! Order yours today!

"The Advent Calendar to Color" is
being sponsored as Diocese-wide fundraising project through the office of our Bishop, David Rice. It's a great way to help celebrate the month-long season of anticipation which precedes Christmas.

An entirely novel concept, "The Advent Calendar to Color" combines the current craze for coloring books containing complex and interesting images with a traditional Advent calendar. The idea is for adults and children together to color one page each day. Pages cover the five "candle Sundays" on specifically religious themes which are traditional in the Episcopal church, while images for weekdays and Saturdays cover a wide variety of seasonal, Christian, and ecumenical themes. Each page is packed with detail: there are Christmas trees, Santa Claus and Old St. Nick; winter fun going ice skating and building a snowman; gratitude for the beauty of nature and for wild animals; the abundance of field and garden. Bells give tongue, angels appear, and there are packages tied with ribbons. The idea is to foster dialogue between children and adults, provide "teachable moments", counter "Xmas commercialism", and provide a guide to the deeper meanings of the season. Coloring the pages is also just plain FUN.
