Greetings Sisters and Brothers and blessing for 2016
Pictured: Greg Rickel (Olympia), Kirk Smith (Arizona), Michael Hanley (Oregon), Dan Edwards (Nevada), Robert Fitzpatrick (Hawaii), Jim Mathes (San Diego), Nedi Rivera (Eastern Oregon), Mary Gray-Reeves (El Camino Real), Mary Glasspool (Los Angeles), DR (San Joaquin), Brian Thom (Idaho) and Barry Beisner (Northern California), not pictured: Scott Hayashi (Utah). This week thirteen bishops from Province 8 (the Province of which SJ is a part) descended upon our fair diocese (actually we are far from "fair" insert "wet" - Thanks be to God), but I digress, for our annual meeting. We gathered at Holy Family, Fresno where we were treated to a stunning lunch and typically stellar hospitality. Michele Racusin presented concerning our formation and training effort for the diaconate in SJ (Cheers Michele and well done!). And we heard from the Church Pension Group. From Holy Family, we traversed up to ECCO where we would spend the next two days. At ECCO, bishops heard from Suzy Ward, Kate Cullinane and Ellen Meyer. Suzy, Kate and Ellen presented with the intent that my colleagues would grasp a deeper understanding of and appreciation for the uniqueness of SJ, in local contexts and in broader contexts (Thanks you three, you did SJ proud!).
I was delighted last year when it was suggested that this meeting should occur in SJ. The impetus for that suggestion was to ensure that the SJ narrative could be better, as I suggested, understood and appreciated. Moreover, Province 8 Bishops met in SJ to communicate that we are far from alone. We are a part of a far greater community and I pray that reminder comes to each of us as a reassuring reminder! And equally, this occasion provided us the opportunity to offer some of the things happening in this diocese which, I can assure you, continue to catch the interest of other parts of our church.
I wish to express my gratitude to Ellen Meyer for her extraordinary choreography and coordination leading up to and through this important meeting.
Epiphany is upon us!
