The Friday Reflection Title
From Bishop David,

It is Thursday afternoon and I arrived home moments ago from a three day retreat. I wish to offer one commentary and one reflection regarding our retreat. Firstly the commentary, I cannot think of a better time for our clergy to remove themselves from their local context and from the communities for which they have responsibility than during the Season of Advent. As I said to colleagues whilst we enjoyed the lovely surroundings at St. Anthony's Retreat Center, Three Rivers, there are innumerable things we could all be doing in our respective contexts which is all the more reason why a retreat is so absolutely necessary. Moreover, to go on retreat during a Season in the Christian Year when the emphasis is so clearly on "pausing" and endeavoring to find the sacred amid all the noise and business of our lives makes complete sense. In addition, the things we could be doing in our respective context, chances are others could and perhaps should be doing those things anyway. Suffice it to say, the Advent Clergy Retreat at St. Anthony's, Three Rivers provided an opportunity for respite, relaxation, reflection and recreation and that must be a good model for all of us particularly as far too many of us are running around in preparation for Christmas.

Secondly, I wish to offer a brief reflection on the retreat. Canon Kate invited Bob Giannini, former Cathedral and Seminary Dean to guide and facilitate our retreat. In a word, Bob was stunning! His topics for discussion included: God in a New Light, The Church in a New Light and The Self in a New Light. From my perspective, by far-and-away, the most memorable part of these sessions involved the ways in which Bob modeled and encouraged honest and holy conversation and then how he provided the space for us to follow his model.

It was very good stuff indeed and I can honestly say, I/we have been properly "Advented!

Lastly, today we had a Eucharistic Service of Remembrance for our brother, friend and colleague Basil Matthews.

And it was right and good that we did so.
Thanks be to God!
Advent Blessings
+David

End Your Year With Giving
End your year with giving

With another year of stock market gains, parishioners who pay their pledges by stock transfer are well positioned to be generous. By donating stock to the church, you can offset those gains with a tax credit based on the appreciated value. Here are some ways to put that abundance to work for your church and practice fearless generosity.

Simple Gifting Process: Direct your financial advisor to transfer securities into the Diocese of San Joaquin's account at Charles Schwab. As soon as the securities are received, they will be sold and the proceeds sent to your church per your instructions.

You can talk with Diocesan Treasurer Marion Austin at 559.449.397559.449.3977 about this and other giving strategies.

Planned Giving: Many planned giving instruments such as charitable gift annuities can be funded with appreciated securities. These offer the tax advantages of a charitable gift and some also create income for the donor as well. You can get more information on this from the Episcopal Church Foundation:

Be sure to check with your legal or financial advisors before making a decision.

Canon Randy Kimmler returns as our 2016 Retreat Leader.
Even before the end of the 2015 gathering, it was consensus that we wanted to have Randy return to lead our next retreat in 2016!
xt retreat in 2016! Randy is a recently retired Missioner for Vocations in the Diocese of Los Angeles, where he supported and oversaw clergy development prior to and after ordination. About 8 years ago, he helped plant the Community of the Holy Spirit (CHS) in the Silver Lake district of Los Angeles. Lay-organized and led, the group is an
emergent progressive Christian community that is being studied by many Episcopal dioceses. "It's not a church. It's not a mission. It's an anomaly and dioceses around the country are trying to figure out what to do with groups like us that are springing up all over the place."  Randy attends St. John's ProCathedral in Los Angeles, serves on the Bishop's Commission on LGBT Ministries and has been recognized by Bishop Jon Bruno for his significant service to the wider church.
