Karen Olds,
From St. John the Evangelist
Last week we read The Rev. Lyn Morlan's report on the Stockton Human Trafficking Event on August 1st and the intense power point presentation by Suzanne Schultz of the San Joaquin County's District Attorney's Office. The presentation involved listening to a 911 call from a 16 year old girl who was the victim of Human Trafficking in San Joaquin County. Rev. Lyn was right in recalling "there were not many dry eyes in the house by the time it was finished".
On Tuesday, August 11, 2015, the Stockton Record reported the conviction of the man who was pimping this young girl. He will be serving a twelve year sentence. District Attorney Elton Grau credits the "constant stream of cases" to the increased public awareness and education of this horrific crime. Our tears have now turned to tears of joy as we witness the difference we can make by our involvement and continued awareness of Human Trafficking. As Debbie Johnson of Without Permission said in her presentation, "Just tell one person, educate one person and we'll make a difference".

A Yellow Bag Story
Around 7:15 pm on Aug. 11th, I was just about to pull out of the shopping center parking lot, when I saw a woman staggering towards me, disheveled, crying, holding her head, with blood dripping down her side. I quickly pulled over and got out of my car to help. She was disoriented, in shock, and not sure what had happened. She was homeless, she said, and had been asleep under some shrubs in the greenbelt nearby, when she awoke to sudden pain in her head and blood all over. She saw a large stick lying on the ground nearby, but didn't know if someone had hit her, or thrown it at her, or if it had somehow fallen on her (even though, she said, there had been no large trees nearby). She had the presence of mind to pick up her purse and bring it with her as she stumbled in search of help, but no one had helped her...click here

The Episcopal Clergy Spouses of San Joaquin
had their first retreat last week at the beautiful ECCO retreat center in Oakhurst. Several of us had been there before; but for many, it had been a long time, in a different era. Some of us were retired, while others were in the 'thick' of their clergy family lives. Food and drink, laughter, fun and creativity, amongst this tranquil setting was the perfect recipe for reflecting, sharing and getting to know one another. We shared personal stories, and explored our many common bonds - and we all left feeling connected and wanting more... click here
