The Friday Reflection Title

June 26, 2015

"To embrace photography as a form of prayer means to meet God in that deepest stillness inside of you... To spend hours together there, seeing Creation through God's eyes, joining with God in proclaiming it good.

"If you are accustomed to thinking of contemplative prayer as sitting very still, trying to block out the external world and empty your mind of all distractions, then this is the opposite. Photography/prayer is contemplation in motion, with all your senses fully awake." (excerpted from https://azetterb.exposure.co/photography-as-prayer)

Take a look at this stunning photo essay on photography as prayer, published by Andee Zetterbaum, member of the Episcopal Church of St. John the Baptist in Lodi.

In an article in St. John's May Tidings newsletter, Carol Foote writes, "Andee invites us into a world where she marries stunning photographic images from the eyes of her camera and her heart with poetic, inspirational writing. Her online photo essay...draws us into the experience of moving out into the world with a camera, an open heart and wide eyes, slowing us down to appreciate God's presence in creation with a new aliveness, respect and gratitude. She invites us into her inner life, camera in hand, with prayerful perspectives on the gifts that these images and this experience offer."

Stories of the Bag...

 A Story of the Bag

From Elaine Berg, St. Paul's, Bakersfield

Many of you may know my son by his nickname, Poppy. His given name is Alpha Omega Stewart III. We came to what was Grace Episcopal Church in August of 2008 and we were instantly welcomed with open arms and many invitations to join things and help out a small and growing church in a box. The cool thing was that not only I was asked to help, but for the first time at any church we had ever attended in 28 years, Poppy was asked to help. Not asked if he "needed help". Big difference! Poppy was born with Down's syndrome and he and I have been asked his entire life what kind of help he needed. Never that "his help" was needed. Again, big difference. First Sunday there I was added to Jackie Glenn's big white treat board that everyone at Grace and now St. Paul's is well acquainted with and Poppy was added to Gregg Glenn's Usher Rota with training to begin the next Sunday. His best friend Daniel who lives with us much of the time also has Down's syndrome and also was welcomed with open arms as were my grandchildren who guess what! Don't have Down's syndrome.

Quickly feeling like family to Grace, Poppy began inviting friends to his new church and one was a young man, Tim, who had recently lost his father suddenly to a heart attack. Over the years, Tim, quickly and his mother, Kathie, slowly began to embrace Grace because of course Grace was embracing Tim and what mother can resist people who love their child? Kathie was a lifelong Presbyterian and knew little about us Episcopalians except we hug a lot and have lots of potlucks.

Well many years have passed and although it's difficult for Kathie to get up early on all Sundays after a long work week, she and Tim are here with us for everything else including our new ministry, Yellow Bags of Love, which was born from the heart of our fellow parishioner, Amador Alcazar. The second Saturday of each month we meet in Grace Hall to fill the yellow bags given by the Diocese. This story is about the first day 15 of us met to fill the bags and make a plan for distribution.

After all the bags were stuffed many of us started to grab 1-3 bags to put in our cars so we would have them near to give to someone in need that we would be sure to meet sooner than later. I noticed Kathie was leaving without a bag and I could hear that Tim was asking her if he could take one. She said she really wouldn't have an opportunity to give one out because she just drives to work and back home. I challenged her to take one anyway and if she didn't find someone to give it to by Wednesday I would take it from her. I knew she was hesitant because she is uncomfortable one on one talking to the homeless and I hoped an encounter would ease this. Thankfully at 1:30 pm she took the challenge.

The following are texts that I began to receive soon after we parted ways in the parking lot:

3:15pm: "Please forward my text to Amador: just shared our first yellow bag and met an elder woman Maddie, out in front of Smart and Final by F St. She was in the group of people that were thrown out of the encampment on Union Avenue by the city yesterday. Tim and I talked to her a few minutes. Tim will not let me go home until we find 2 other people.......THIS is his job.

5:25pm: Found Friend #2: Gregory, who desperately needed food and a Kleenex. Thankfully our yellow bag had both. We sat down next to him on the curb and talked awhile. He thinks he was on TV last night. He offered Tim his autograph. Such a sweet man. God bless him. Please tell Amador. P.S. Gregory was in front of a laundromat off of Golden State Highway.

6:30pm: Last Bag! Tony on the corner of H St. and Brundage Lane. Older man with a split and bleeding lip. Thankfully our yellow bag had some wet wipes and I had a band aide so we cleaned him up and put on the band aide and he was so grateful. He spoke mostly Spanish but we understood each other. He was sitting beside a dumpster at Payday Loans. Talked for a while but he was so hungry we left so he could get to his yellow bag of goodies. Now Tim will let me go home. LOL. God bless him. Please also tell Amador that Tim said Tony, the last man as he was eating his cookies, put his new black socks on. Amador picked just the right things to put in the bags, Oh; I also encouraged each one of them to share the things they didn't need with someone else. Now Tim and I have three new people on our prayer list. Tim, with his dear heart was grinning from ear to ear at the end, said to me; "Mom, now those people are happy" and I realized that this made a much greater impact on me. I was so out of my comfort zone. I am such an anxious person by nature and with Ken gone I'm more nervous around strangers, but I realize the reality of giving the bags is that it probably will change the life of the receiver for probably 15 to 30 minutes, but giving the bags has changed my life forever."

Education for Ministry (EfM) Mentor Training

The diocese will offer its first Vocations Formation Training for EfMmentors at Holy Family Church Wednesday, August 26th starting at 1:00pm and ending on Friday, August 28th at 2:00pm. Mentor training and certification is required in order to form and mentor an EfM group.

Vocations Formation is an advanced mentor training and requires that the trainee has attended a minimum of two training cycles and has an EfM group enrolled.

Certification requires a full 18 contact hours with your trainer, so you will need to attend the entire event. We plan the schedule carefully in order to use our trainers' time well.

The cost of the training is $199. The fee includes two meals. It does not cover overnight accommodations.

Please be aware that recertification as an EfM mentor is not automatic. This is standard practice. An important part of the trainer's role is to discern when mentor-trainees are appropriately prepared to continue to lead an EfM group.

Please return your form and registration fee soon to confirm your reservation, but no later than August 7th. Send them to the address listed on the bottom of the registration form, not to the Diocesan Office.  In the meantime, don't hesitate to call or email if you have any questions.

Good News from our Parishes and Missions and Deaneries...

Notes from the Central Deanery Clericus

Eight clerics from the Central Deanery were able to gather on the 17th of June in Hanford for a clericus meeting.   We have finally established a pattern to meet every other month during the day at one of the churches, beginning with the Eucharist at 11.00 am.   Somewhat unique for our deanery is the occasional presence of one of the Roman Catholic priests from Hanford, who has joined us several times.

At present we are working our way through The New Jim Crow, by Michelle Alexander.   Well-documented, the book contains much by way of history of issues within the United States from the early years to the present. It would have been easy to simply debate the details and facts in the book, but we discovered that, while there were many issues that we did not Want to be true, we needed to look more deeply at what the issues are and how we can respond to them.

We touched on issues of Racism, Ethnicity, Poverty, and Class, while recognizing that these are all inter-related subjects that cannot be dealt with solely by themselves. While it is important that we all engage in the study and work around anti-racism, it is important to look at how other factors come to play.

With the Central Valley being the home to so many State and Federal Prisons, (whether Prisons, Detention Centers, Mental Hospitals, or any other name) this a major local issue for us.   The Roman Catholic Diocese of Fresno is recognized worldwide as the Diocese having the most Roman Catholics in prison, leading to some of their diocesan efforts to provide chaplaincy and other programs to prisoners and their families.   This raises questions on whether more members of our Episcopal congregations ought to become involved with different levels of ministry with prisoners or their families.

Within the Central Deanery, we are also trying to start a second, evening gathering of clergy. This is geared especially toward those who might be bi-vocational or otherwise occupied during the day.

"Inequality for All"

Film and Discussion

St. Paul's, Visalia

June 29, 2015

As a child, Professor Robert Reich (former U.S. Secretary of Labor and current Chancellor's Professor of Public Policy at Berkeley) made alliances with older boys as protection from bullying. Born with a condition that limited his physical growth, be became a target. As an adult, his identification with those who suffer from the many forms of economic bullying led him to seek protection for them.

The film, "Inequality for All", is based around Professor Reich's book "Aftershock: The Next Economy and America's Future". At times funny, educational, compassionate, entertaining, and poignant, "Inequality for All" sheds light on the widening economic inequality in America, it's causes, how it can undermine democracy, and the real people whose lives are affected -- some of whom inhabited his class, "Wealth and Poverty", on the Berkeley campus. Finally, he deals with what should be done, the role of the middle class, and how it could get done.

This outstanding 90 minute film will be presented Monday, June 29th at 6:30 p.m. with discussion after the viewing. This event will be held "The Little House" at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Visalia, 939 Chinowth. This will be the first of an on-going series of speakers or documentary/discussion events. Come join us in the conversation! All are welcome!
