The Friday Reflection Title

May 15, 2015

Holiday Reflection from Down Under

G'day, Kia Ora and Hello San Joaquin, firstly, it is lovely to be back.  And secondly, I wish to offer a few reflections, both familial and ecclesial from our holiday in Aotearoa, New Zealand.

Our first familial reconnect was with our 20 year old, Zoe.  Zoe is in her 3rd year at Uni and we enjoyed spending a few days with her in what she considers her city,

Wellington.  Zoe loves her academic work and she and her flat mates are well suited for one another.

We then spent a week in Dunedin with our son, Ian.  Ian is 22 and has started his first Post-Uni job.  His graduation was the main reason for the placing and positioning of our holiday.  Ian and his girlfriend, Kerri, plan to work in Dunedin for a year, save as much "dosh as poss" (money as possible) and then set out for their OE (Overseas Experience, something of a Kiwi Institution).

As you might imagine, leaving Ian and Zoe behind in NZ has been exceedingly difficult.  We are comforted by the fact that they are doing so well.  And we enjoyed our brief catch up with them immensely.  Equally, we are grateful that we were able to spend time with old mates.  I will say, without exception, our Kiwi friends wanted to know heaps about where we have landed (I'll come back to that one).

In Wellington, Tracy and I stayed with a priest from my former diocese.  He shifted to Wellington right before we shifted to San Joaquin.  He talked about his work in his inner city parish, hence this brief ecclesial reflection.  Brian, a fine cleric over whom I think I had considerable influence, recounted his Holy Week experience of this year, specifically, Good Friday.  He decided that instead of having the same Stations of the Cross Service with the same 15 people in attendance, he would opt for a different approach.  Brian, along with various social and governmental agencies in his city, hired a bus.  The bus traveled to a series of stops throughout the city where well documented human rights/social justice events occurred in the past.  A reading was offered at each stop, along with a very brief reflection and a prayer.  This was a missional Stations of the Cross and the day before the service, Brian realized one bus simply would not do, a second bus was hired.  By far-and-away, the majority of people occupying spaces on those buses had never stepped foot in Brian's inner city parish.  And there is a very good chance that none of those occupants will step foot now.  But, I can assure you of this, they know something about the church they didn't know prior to their mobile SofC experience.  And when help is needed, someone on that bus will have an idea who to call and where to go.  Brian was prompted to recount this occasion after I told him about "Stories of the Bag" and "Tour against Trafficking" and other missional-movements in SJ.  Everyone who queried us about SJ was extraordinarily interested in the recent history of this diocese and "what we're up to" at present.

All this is to say SJ, I deeply believe, we are on the right track.  We are endeavoring to ensure that we are known in our respective communities.  We are endeavoring to make certain that an Episcopal Presence in known wherever we are.  We are endeavoring to develop a new (which is really old, actually) ecclesiology, one that has little to do with plant and property and far more to do with relationships, far more to do with being church and not simply attending church.

Again, SJ, it is good to be home.

Blessings
+David

Believe Out Loud Workshop Coming to Modesto!

Integrity's Believe Out Loud (BOL) workshops are designed to teach people how to engage their parishes in meaningful conversations about becoming more welcoming to LGBTQ persons, and how to take the next steps in being public about it.  With the tools you will gain from this workshop, you can work with your fellow Christians to build your churches as inclusive communities that welcome EVERYONE into the body of Christ. BOL Workshops ensure that each participant will leave with the ability and confidence to start the conversation in a collaborative, non-confrontational way.

St. Anthony's Retreat...

Love, Suffering and the Cross:

A Retreat with Julian of Norwich

June 5-7, 2015

While having lived in the 14th century, Julian of Norwich has much to say to us today. Her visions of Christ's suffering reveal the depths of love, and surprisingly convey a sense of peace and joy. Come to St Anthony's Retreat House in Three Rivers to learn about and pray with this extraordinary woman. Fr. Luis Rodriguez, the Rector of the Episcopal Church of the Savior in Hanford, will be leading this retreat, which is very similar to the Women's Retreat he led some years ago at ECCO. He is a friend of the Julian Shrine in England, has visited there many times and led a number of pilgrimages to this holy place.

A registration form with further details can be clicking here , or by visiting St Anthony's website at http://www.stanthonyretreat.org.

The Benedictine Experience...

The Benedictine Experience

takes place each year in a number of special places around the United States and England. Each Experience offers an opportunity to live the rhythm of Benedictine life for a few days in a "thin place" where God's presence seems very near. Each offers a chance to explore Benedictine values such as humility, stability, and listening. Every day, rich in silence, offers the distinctive balance of time for prayer, study, work, and rest. Two Benedictine Experiences are coming up in June:

Bishop's Ranch, Healdsburg, California, June 22-29, 2015: This is truly a "thin place," with beautiful views of the surrounding vineyards and hills. We will learn from conferences by Sr. Mary Donald Corcoran, OSB as well as Fr. James Knutsen and Fr. Robert Hale, OSB. Sacred music helps us build a Benedictine community of constant prayer with John Renke as musical director.

Canterbury Cathedral, June
22-29, 2015: We will stay at the Canterbury Cathedral Lodge, within the Precincts of the Cathedral. In this splendid and sacred space, we will join the Cathedral community in Morning Prayer, Eucharist, and Evening Prayer each day, often with the Cathedral choir. Our spiritual director is Abbot Stuart Burns, OSB, who is the abbot of a growing community of Benedictine brothers and sisters at Mucknell Abbey in Worcestershire.

Walking To Stamp Out Hunger!

Here's a nice photo of the St. Paul's, Modesto contingent getting ready to participate in the Modesto CROP Hunger Walk today (May 9). The Walk raises funds to assist hungry people in Modesto and around the world. 75% of the funds from this Walk go to Church World Service and 25% go to Modesto's Interfaith Ministries. St. Paul's, Modesto hadn't participated in the Walk before, but we got into it in a big way!We had the largest contingent of walkers.

We've raised $3135.00 thus far with some donations yet to be turned in.  A goal was set for $1500, and we have more than double that. and when the totals are tallied will likely have raised the most money. Anyone interested in learning about CROP Hunger Walks in their community can learn more at www.crophungerwalk.org.

St. Paul's, Modesto Outreach to Girl Scout Community

As part of our service to the community, St. Paul's, Modesto regularly opens its doors free of charge to various Girl Scout and Boy Scout troops. This past month about 60 girls took part in the Girl Scouts Powder Puff Derby held in our church hall. Each competitor received a kit with pinewood to create her car. The girls then placed them atop the sloping track and let gravity carry them to the floor. They created designs on the cars that included Girls Scout Cookies, flowers and "The A-Team." A special themed Girl Scout Cookie pinewood derby car was included in the race. Herein is an example of the types of community building events to which our church aspires as part of nurturing the local community.

ICON WORKSHOP

St Andrew's Episcopal Church in Taft

May 14, 15 and 16

9:00 AM to 3:00 PM each day

Joyce Tanner will provide the supplies and the expertise for people to create an icon. St Andrew's will provide the lunches.

Joyce will be at St Andrew's Episcopal Church in Taft for three days in May to help whoever would like to create an icon.

As many of you already know Joyce has been offering these icon workshops all over the diocese and many people have benefited by her faithful instruction.

We can see her beautiful icons in many churches in the Diocese of San Joaquin.

Everyone is welcome to come and be given the opportunity to create. It is a wonderful way to explore some of the important people and symbols imbedded our common faith. A person does not need to be a talented artist to come, participate and have some fun painting in the long and ancient tradition of "writing an icon".

The cost of the workshop is $35.00 which is meant to cover the cost of the supplies needed to create an icon. Scholarships are available. Please contact the church if a scholarship is needed.

Joyce will be the speaker at the Taft Rotary Club luncheon meeting on Wednesday May 13

.

The pictured icon is the Baptism of Jesus which is in St Andrew's Episcopal Church, in Taft, California.

You are invited to Holy Family!

We know that you are concerned, as are we, with the human trafficking that is occurring in our valley communities. We join in and support your efforts to bring awareness to the tragedy of human trafficking. Because of your commitment and leadership on this issue, we invite you to participate in an upcoming event, we hope, will inspire further action to bring liberty to those enslaved and justice to those who ensnare.

Please consider joining us for a Human Trafficking Awareness to Action Summit, to be held on May 30th at 4:00 pm. This summit will feature the film, A Trafficked Life, which explores the problem of human trafficking in our own valley communities. The film will be followed by a question and answer session and a call to action to eradicate human trafficking.

We hope you will consider participating. It will take all of us, working together in a sustained fashion, for liberty and justice in our communities.

Shalom,

From St. Michael's, Ridgecrest

Even though we are in the desert and complying with the new guidelines of 3 times a week watering, at St Michael's Ridgecrest we have a beautiful garden. Cactus, succulents, established trees and drought tolerant shrubs, plants in containers and a few wildflower volunteers enable us to save water and still give our grounds some lovely "curb appeal".
