Stories of the Bag...

from St. Anne's, Stockton

with gratitude from Renee Jacobs

I took one of the yellow bags that were designed to hand out to the needy people on the streets of Stockton. I had it for a couple of weeks, and while I saw some needy people, it was either unsafe to stop, or to be honest, it may have been an inconvenience to me.

A short while ago I was at one of the shopping centers, and as I came out of the store a man approached me in the parking lot. He was dirty and disheveled, and was not pushing a cart or anything I could see. He put his hands together under his chin, in a pleading manner, and attempted to smile - poor thing had no teeth and it was a very sad, but earnest plea. My first instinct was to distance myself from him, and I got in my car and started to leave. As I was driving away the thought of the bag came to mind, and I turned around and came to a stop. I got out of the car and retrieved the bag from the back of my car. I walked over to him and handed him the bag; he looked inside and the sweetest smile cross his face. He again placed his folded hands under his chin and mouthed "Thank You" to me.

As I was leaving, I thanked God for bringing that bag to mind, and then I thanked St. Anne's for making those bags available to myself and others. It brought to mind how blessed I truly am, and how grateful I am to be in a place where the needy are thought more of than mere annoyances. Thanks to all who made it possible for me to learn the lesson of giving, and to encourage me to be grateful for all that God has graced me with.

and the lesson grows from Leslie Sanchez

When we began collecting our supplies for the bags, Leslie got her place of work involved. She put a container in the beauty shop so that coworkers and customers could bring in supplies to go in the bags. She had a yellow bag with the tub so people could see what we were doing. A couple of the high school age children of coworkers wanted to help us 'stuff the bags' at St. Anne's, but were unable to make it the evening the Confirmation Class was preparing the bags. The idea stuck with one of the students from Bear Creek High School. He asked Leslie if it would be alright for him to put a bin at his high school so that they could collect supplies for bags. Of course, she told him yes.

He got permission from the school to put out the bin and to spread the word about what St. Anne's was doing. Turns out they went even further. The high school group not only collected supplies, they created their own bags and have been handing them out to those in need. How awesome is that!

a story of the bag from Kimberly Watts-Willis as told to those gathered for Maundy Thursday (any errors in this retelling are the fault of the editor)

I had taken a bag and placed it in my car. I added a couple items to the bag which I thought would be helpful. Usually I encounter people with signs for help standing in the median or at the side of the road at stop signs and lights, but for some reason I had gone for a few weeks without encountering one. The bag continued to 'roll' around in the back of my minivan, and I was considering just taking it out.

On my way to work I pulled up to a stop sign, and there was a man in the middle of the traffic lane with a sign which said "Help". This was unusual and I was trying to decide whether to just go around him (into an oncoming traffic lane) or go a different route. Other cars were pulling up behind me. He just stood in the middle of the road looking very dejected. I remembered the bag in the back of the car, but was weighing the annoyance of the drivers behind me with the moments it would take to get the bag and give it to the man. Figuring, what the heck, I got out of the car, went back and got the bag, and took it to the man. I told him that I hoped there might be something in it that he could use. He didn't say anything and wouldn't take the bag from me.

Knowing that I needed to get back in the car and move out of the way, I placed the bag at his feet. He still didn't pick it up. I got back in and pulled around the man who was standing in the street with a bright yellow bag at his feet. When I'd gone a block and was at the next stop sign, I looked back in my rear view mirror. The man and the bag were gone. I hope that there was something in that bag that he needed.

"Travel Light, leaving baggage behind."

29th B+E+S+T Conference

Last week I attended the 29th B+E+S+T (Bishop Executive Secretaries Together) Conference. The conference is held every year rotating by province. The conference this year was hosted by our Province VIII and was held in San Diego. Administrators, Bishop Executive Secretaries and Personal Assistants to the Bishop attend this conference from the entire Episcopal Church of the United States including South America and the pan pacific.

This year 14 out of the 18 dioceses of Province VIII were represented. Bishops attend these conferences and a high number attended this year. Our Bishop David was asked to be the keynote speaker. His presentation was inspirational and well received knocking it out of the ball park. His presentation continued to be mentioned throughout the entire convention with great admiration for him and our diocese. Many mentioned that our diocese was fortunate to have him as our bishop and I agree.

For the third year I was nominated to be the Provincial Representative for Membership. It is a great privilege and honor to represent the Diocese and the Province in this capacity.

St. Anthony's Retreat...

Love, Suffering and the Cross:

A Retreat with Julian of Norwich

June 5-17, 2015

While having lived in the 14th century, Julian of Norwich has much to say to us today. Her visions of Christ's suffering reveal the depths of love, and surprisingly convey a sense of peace and joy. Come to St Anthony's Retreat House in Three Rivers to learn about and pray with this extraordinary woman. Fr. Luis Rodriguez, the Rector of the Episcopal Church of the Savior in Hanford, will be leading this retreat, which is very similar to the Women's Retreat he led some years ago at ECCO. He is a friend of the Julian Shrine in England, has visited there many times and led a number of pilgrimages to this holy place.

A registration form with further details can be clicking here, or by visiting St Anthony's website at http://www.stanthonyretreat.org.

The Benedictine Experience...

The Benedictine Experience

takes place each year in a number of special places around the United States and England. Each Experience offers an opportunity to live the rhythm of Benedictine life for a few days in a "thin place" where God's presence seems very near. Each offers a chance to explore Benedictine values such as humility, stability, and listening. Every day, rich in silence, offers the distinctive balance of time for prayer, study, work, and rest. Two Benedictine Experiences are coming up in June:

Bishop's Ranch, Healdsburg, California, June 22-29, 2015: This is truly a "thin place," with beautiful views of the surrounding vineyards and hills. We will learn from conferences by Sr. Mary Donald Corcoran, OSB as well as Fr. James Knutsen and Fr. Robert Hale, OSB. Sacred music helps us build a Benedictine community of constant prayer with John Renke as musical director.

Canterbury Cathedral, June
22-29, 2015: We will stay at the Canterbury Cathedral Lodge, within the Precincts of the Cathedral. In this splendid and sacred space, we will join the Cathedral community in Morning Prayer, Eucharist, and Evening Prayer each day, often with the Cathedral choir. Our spiritual director is Abbot Stuart Burns, OSB, who is the abbot of a growing community of Benedictine brothers and sisters at Mucknell Abbey in Worcestershire.

ICON WORKSHOP

St Andrew's Episcopal Church in Taft

May 14, 15 and 16

9:00 AM to 3:00 PM each day

Joyce Tanner will provide the supplies and the expertise for people to create an icon. St Andrew's will provide the lunches.

Joyce will be at St Andrew's Episcopal Church in Taft for three days in May to help whoever would like to create an icon.

As many of you already know Joyce has been offering these icon workshops all over the diocese and many people have benefited by her faithful instruction.

We can see her beautiful icons in many churches in the Diocese of San Joaquin.

Everyone is welcome to come and be given the opportunity to create. It is a wonderful way to explore some of the important people and symbols imbedded our common faith. A person does not need to be a talented artist to come, participate and have some fun painting in the long and ancient tradition of "writing an icon".

The cost of the workshop is $35.00 which is meant to cover the cost of the supplies needed to create an icon. Scholarships are available. Please contact the church if a scholarship is needed.

Joyce will be the speaker at the Taft Rotary Club luncheon meeting on Wednesday May 13

.

The pictured icon is the Baptism of Jesus which is in St Andrew's Episcopal Church, in Taft, California.

From St. Michael's, Ridgecrest

Even though we are in the desert and complying with the new guidelines of 3 times a week watering, at St Michael's Ridgecrest we have a beautiful garden. Cactus, succulents, established trees and drought tolerant shrubs, plants in containers and a few wildflower volunteers enable us to save water and still give our grounds some lovely "curb appeal".
