April 10, 2015"Stories of the Bag" Fr. Bob Woods, St. Sherrian's, Kernville Bishop David asked me to write about St. Sherrian's experience with our Diaconnal bags. Here with a non-story, but a story that speaks volumes about why we love our mountain home. I distributed the bags, and they were quickly loaded up and made ready to go. Then came the unexpected problem: In a town of less than 2,000 souls, there just ain't many homeless. While it is a below-average-income area, the cost of living is low and, more importantly, it is a giving and caring community overall. As a classic example, during a major fire two summers ago, the Red Cross opened a shelter at the local school, hundreds of us were evacuated, but only two families showed up at the shelter. Everyone else was taken in by friends and neighbors; Alexis and I had three calls within a half hour or so after the evacuation was announced. Back to the bags: There is really only one visible homeless person in and around Kernville, who for that reason received two bags. This individual cheerfully offered to pass it on to someone in need. Some of us trolled neighboring towns (Lake Isabella, Wofford Heights) with little success, and one of us got the bright idea of contacting the local food pantry for suggestions. It is inspiring to me, through this exercise, to have learned that the generosity of this valley extends even farther than I thought. I think it is in large measure due to the high percentage of churched people in the valley (wish more were Episcopalians though!) and the inherent generosity of true "country folk." It made me realize how blessed we all are to live in such a place.

ICON WORKSHOP
St Andrew's Episcopal Church in Taft
May 14, 15 and 16
9:00 AM to 3:00 PM each day
Joyce Tanner will provide the supplies and the expertise for people to create an icon. St Andrew's will provide the lunches.
Joyce will be at St Andrew's Episcopal Church in Taft for three days in May to help whoever would like to create an icon.
As many of you already know Joyce has been offering these icon workshops all over the diocese and many people have benefited by her faithful instruction.
We can see her beautiful icons in many churches in the Diocese of San Joaquin.
Everyone is welcome to come and be given the opportunity to create. It is a wonderful way to explore some of the important people and symbols imbedded our common faith. A person does not need to be a talented artist to come, participate and have some fun painting in the long and ancient tradition of "writing an icon".
The cost of the workshop is $35.00 which is meant to cover the cost of the supplies needed to create an icon. Scholarships are available. Please contact the church if a scholarship is needed at 1-661-765-23281-661-765-2328.
Joyce will be the speaker at the Taft Rotary Club luncheon meeting on Wednesday May 13. If anyone would like to come and hear what Joyce has to say, please call The Rev. Heather Mueller
The pictured icon is the Baptism of Jesus which is in St Andrew's Episcopal Church, in Taft, California
