SOME NEWS AROUND THE DIOCESE AS WE BEGIN A NEW YEAR

For this week's Friday Reflection I thought I would bring you up-to-date on a number of recent changes happening within the diocese.

St. James', Sonora

The Rev. Verne Walter has been appointed Priest-in-Charge at St. James' in Sonora effective January 1, 2015. The Rev. Andy Anderson retired from St. James at the end of 2014. The Rev. Verne Walter and The Rev. Deacon Carolyn Woodall will serve as the clergy team at St. James', Sonora.

St. John the Evangelist, Stockton

The Rev. Anne Smith has been appointed as Priest-in-Charge of St. John's, Stockton effective January 1, 2015. The Rev. Ruth Casipit-Paguio has also been appointed to serve as priest at St. John's, Stockton. Mother Ruth will continue her work at the congregation of Holy Child, San Jose (diocese of El Camino Real) while she also serves at St. John's. Mother Anne has also recently been called as Priest-in-Charge at St. Mary's, Elkgrove (diocese of Northern California) in addition to being called as Priest-in-Charge at St. John's, Stockton. Both Mother Anne and Mother Ruth will simultaneously serve two congregations. Mother Anne will focus on the missional and downtown community work of St. John's while Mother Ruth's focus will be to reach out to the Filipino community in Stockton. The Rev. Anne Smith, The Rev. Ruth Casipit-Paguio and The Rev. Deacon Stephen Bentley will serve as the clergy team at St. John's, Stockton. We continue to be grateful to the Northern Deanery, and are especially thankful for the contributions of time and leadership from the two neighboring congregations of St. Anne's, Stockton and St. John the Baptist, Lodi, for their support as we envision a new start for St. John's with a unique focus for ministry.

St. Paul's, Modesto

The bishop has appointed himself as Bishop/Priest-in-Charge of St. Paul's, Modesto effective January 1, 2015. He has also appointed The Rev. Glenn Kanestrom and The Rev. Nick Lorenzetti to serve as priests on the staff of St. Paul's. The bishop is hopeful of a new experiment in the life of the church as the praying communities of Christ the King and St. Paul's endeavor to come together to serve God in the geographical community of Modesto/Riverbank.

St. Paul's, Bakersfield

The Rev. Deacon Steven Karcher has been appointed to serve as deacon at St. Paul's in Bakersfield. While serving at St. Paul's, Deacon Steve will make his presence and services known to both the additional communities of St. Sherrian's, Kernville and of St. Andrew's, Taft on a jointly agreeable basis. As an ongoing development of the "hub" concept Steve's diaconal ministry is intended to reach multiple congregations. The Rev. Dr. Tim Vivian, Rev. Deborah Deboer, The Rev. Dr. Anne Benvenuti and The Rev. Deacon Steven Karcher will serve as the clergy team at St. Paul's, Bakersfield.

Blessings as we all begin a new year filled with God's wonder and grace.

Meet Canon Randy Kimmler, our 2015 Retreat Leader.

Randy is Missioner for Vocations in the Diocese of Los Angeles, where he supports and oversees clergy development prior to and after ordination. About 8 years ago, he helped plant the Community of the Holy Spirit (CHS) in the Silver Lake district of Los Angeles. Lay-organized and led, the group is an emergent progressive Christian community that is being studied by many Episcopal dioceses. "It's not a church. It's not a mission. It's an

anomaly and dioceses around the country are trying to figure out what to do with groups like us that are springing up all over the place." Those who attended the 76th General Convention 2009 in Los Angeles experienced wonderful worship services and worship spaces designed by Randy and his team. Randy attends St. John's ProCathedral in Los Angeles, serves on the Bishop's Commission on LGBT Ministries and has been recognized by Bishop Jon Bruno for his significant service to the wider church.

The Five Marks of Mission

The Mission of the Church Is the Mission of Christ

~ To proclaim the Good News of the Kingdom
~ To teach, baptize and nurture new believers
~ To respond to human need by loving service
~ To seek to transform unjust structures of society, to challenge violence of every kind and
    to pursue peace and reconciliation
~ To strive to safeguard the integrity of creation and sustain and renew the life of the earth

We recognize with gratitude that the Five Marks of Mission, developed by the Anglican Consultative Council between 1984 and 1990, have won wide acceptance among Anglicans, and have given parishes and dioceses around the world a practical and memorable "checklist" for mission activities.

Love in a Box brings Christmas joy to Europe's children in need

Episcopal News Service] For many orphans and disadvantaged children throughout Europe, being able to open a gift on Christmas Day is merely a dream.

Love in a Box, a ministry of the American Cathedral in Paris, is committed to changing that reality. For more than a decade, the ministry has helped to put a smile on the faces of children who often have very little to smile about.

In the weeks leading up to Christmas, several packing shifts are organized by coordinators Judy Nicault and Betsi Dwyer with Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, and volunteers from local schools loading boxes and backpacks with practical gifts, a few fun items, and some candy. This year, the final count of 3,218 boxes and backpacks is a record.

Didier Chastagnier from The Salvation Army drives the 12-hour round trip from Strasbourg to Paris and parks his van outside the American Cathedral on the first Sunday in Advent.

At the end of the service the choir and congregation take the boxes and process out of the cathedral to Chastagnier's van where the gifts are loaded ready for distribution to European countries such as Bulgaria, Croatia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

A pilgrimage to Iona and Lindisfarne

Perhaps you remember Bishop Logan McMenamie. He was the person who has come twice to St Paul's in Bakersfield and St Andrew's in Taft. He presided at the Kirkin 'O the Tartan with the Kern County Scottish Society,  he has preached at St. Paul's and he has presided at the Evensong service and the blessing of the Haggis at St. Andrew's in Taft.

Bishop Logan McMenamie will lead a pilgrimage to Iona, Lindisfarne and other Celtic holy places next fall. The pilgrimage will be from September 23 - October 6, 2015.

If you want more information or to sign -up for this pilgrimage you can call Molly Whan Tong at 250-412-1884 or 250-592-6333 or email molly.whantong@vision2000.ca.

I was with Bishop Logan  on a pilgrimage in the spring of  2013, and it was a life changing experience for me. Please call if you want to ask about my experience or get more information.
Peace, The Rev. Heather Mueller
