MLK Day is a Special Hands On Amana Day
January 18th is a day of service in honor of the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s legacy, and what better way to give back than to your child's school?

On Monday, parent volunteers will be painting parts of the 4th and 5th grade hallways, weeding the garden beds in the front of the building, and organizing storage rooms.

Sign up between 11 AM - 2 PM by clicking HERE.

ORDER YEARBOOKS, PLACE TRIBUTE ADS

It's that time of year again - time to order your yearbooks and honor your students with a tribute ad.  Our yearbook club has been working diligently all year to design the book, complete with custom cover art.

Right now, you can purchase a yearbook for $25 through January 31.  After that date, the price will go up to $35.  You can also have your student's name digitally imprinted onto the front of the book for an additional $5.

Order online at:

Our school code is:  20922.  You can also order an ad at that same link.  If you prefer to send in a check or cash, you can download an order form here and turn it into the front desk.
STUDENT WINS iPAD FOR EXCELLING WITH IXL
Students who completed more than 5000 problems in IXL were entered in a drawing for an iPad.  The drawing was held at last week's All-school Community Circle, and our winner was kindergartner Zarah M. in Ms. Stryker's class.  Congratulations to Zarah, and to all of the students who completed 5000 or more problems in IXL!

BECOME A FRIEND OF THE AMANA LEARNING GARDEN
Parents - we need your help to make our learning garden experience more enjoyable and more meaningful for our students.

We are looking for a group of people who can volunteer in the garden on a weekly or bi-weekly basis - both to help with classes in the garden, and to assist with garden maintenance.  Please take a minute to respond to this brief survey so that we can gauge interest in this important academic program.

CHAPERON REQUIREMENTS FOR OVERNIGHT FIELD STUDIES
If you are interested in serving as a chaperon on your child's overnight field study, you will need to be certified as a Tier III volunteer with Amana.  This includes everything required for Tier II certification (volunteering in the classroom, or on a single-day field study), as well as submitting to fingerprinting and an FBI background check.  The fingerprinting and background check process must be completed annually, and is specific to Amana (we can't use a background check that's been done for another school or organization).  If you have not had this done for Amana in the last 12 months, you will need to do it again.

If you are unsure about when you last had this done, please email nfox@amanaacademy.org

RE-ENROLLMENT DUE BEFORE JANUARY 31

As we prepare for Open Enrollment for new students, we must calculate how many of our current students and any of their siblings new to the school will be attending Amana next year. We must have this information prior to the lottery so that we can calculate how many open seats we will have.

We ask that you please complete the form on our website prior to January 31, 2016.
SCHOOL WIDE SPELLING BEE COMPETITION
Dear Grades 4-8 Parents,

Your child will be provided study words to participate in the classroom spelling bee Wednesday, January 20, 2016.  Students who win the classroom spelling bee will participate in the school spelling bee Friday, January 22, 2016.  I have provided your child's perspective grade level at this Google link: https://drive.google.com/drive/u/0/folders/0B_Wur0zp1q6UT1U1RG5qUXJkeU0

Please implement these strategies to support the studying process.

Always remember that a spelling bee is a performance.  You will stand in front of other people and spell.  Spelling, like speaking in front of others, makes some people nervous.  So you need to practice.  Find a friend or family member to be the pronouncer and answer all of your questions about the word.  You can ask what it means, how you say it, what language it comes from, and what part of speech it is.  Stand up and pretend you're in front of a microphone, ask your questions, and spell the word-just as if you were at a spelling bee.  Maybe get a bell for when you misspell.

Contact Christian Harden if you have any questions at charden@amanaacademy.org

Sincerely,

Christian Harden
Assistant Principal

IMPORTANT UPDATE FROM ADVENTURE P.E.

This spring, all Amana students will participate in the state mandated Fitnessgram during Adventure P.E.  The Fitnessgram is not a pass/ fail test, but rather a fitness assessment tool that can be used to focus on personal improvement and goal setting.

Thank you!!

Your friends in the P.E. world...
