BE A BUDDY TO A NEW FAMILY |
PIE is excited to welcome a whole host of new families this February following the annual Spring Admissions Lottery! Unlike previous years where we waited until summer to connect new families with established veterans, this year matches will be made in MARCH.
The Buddy Program serves a vital role in our community by easing the transition of new families into Amana life. Buddies help to answer basic questions about the school and its culture. If you can explain the uniform policy or describe what a Learning Showcase is, then you'd made a GREAT buddy! The majority of all communication with new families is done by EMAIL. It's simple. It's positive. It's fun.
We match new families with established ones based on the grades of their children, the cities where they reside or their primary language. We always need families who are bilingual to participate as buddies.
Are you interested? Not sure if you have the time? No worries. Contact Sheila Boyd at amanaacademypievpss@gmail.com to learn more about the program or to volunteer!

FIRST GRADE CREW WINS MICRO-GRANT AWARD FROM PIE |
Congratulations to Amana's first-grade crew, the winner of PIE's inaugural Micro-Grant Program for Teachers award! The award will go towards purchasing a weather station, grow lamps, thermometers, and other equipment related to the first grade's spring expedition related to the study of weather. We are excited about this parent-supported opportunity to enrich and enhance student learning.
The PIE Micro-Grant Program for Teachers was instituted this academic year. It awards grants up to $250 to fund classroom projects that tie into Amana's Expeditionary Learning principles. The award is open to all Amana instructional staff. Encourage your teacher to keep an eye out for the next application deadline.
For more information, contact amanamicrogrant@gmail.com. To get an idea of the application process, view a past application here.

PURCHASE COACH BOOKS FOR NEW GEORGIA MILESTONES STANDARDIZED TEST |
The Georgia Department of Education is launching a new standardized test for this school year which will include questions that require higher depth of knowledge and the ability to explain your reasoning in math and ELA. At Amana we dig deeply into the standards and feel that our students are better prepared than students that don't have the benefit of the Expeditionary Learning model, but a little review is always helpful.
In Elementary School and Middle School, we are pleased to offer the Crosswalk Coach (Science & Social Studies) and Common Core Performance Coach Workbooks (Math & Reading/ELA) to help your child prepare for the Georgia Milestones Test. This grade-specific series provides students with the level of rigorous practice that is called for by the Common Core Standards. Books are available for grades 3-8. We suggest purchasing the answer guides (especially for Math and Reading/LA), since there are many questions which require a constructed response, modeling, and short essays. Coach books are $15 per book, and the answer guides are $10 a piece. You should have received a copy of the order form last week. The deadline for ordering coach books is January 27. |
