ELEMENTARY COMMUNITY CIRCLE - YOUR FEEDBACK IS REQUESTED |
Elementary Community Circle is a time-honored Amana tradition rooted in Expeditionary Learning Core Practices. Community Circle meetings are a common structure in Expeditionary Learning Schools that help to build a culture of pride, success and celebration in both academics and character. Elementary grade levels take turns on a rotating basis to host Community Circle for another grade level. These meetings often include student performances, skits, and presentations that help teach an EL Design Principle.
Community Circle in Elementary School begins September 19. In years past, we have hosted Community Circle in the cafeteria where students had the advantage of the stage and sound system. This year, our school lunch program has grown to include four sections of lunch which does not allow for sufficient time to prepare the cafeteria for students to begin Community Circle before 12:35. This late start time would only allow for a 15-minute Community Circle. There are two options for this year:
1. Move ES Community Circle time to follow MS Community Circle time on Friday mornings from 8:45 - 9:15 AM. Parents would have the ability to drop off their student for school and relax in the PIE Center before Community Circle (or attend MS Community Circle if they have a middle schooler). This option would allow for continued use of the stage and sound system for the students without disruption.
2. Move ES Community Circle to the gym with a start time of 12:35. It would be necessary to move sound equipment and chairs for this option which would require a volunteer force dedicated to set up and break down.
Please submit your feedback using this form. ES Community Circle schedule will be posted to the school calendar next week and begins September 19 following whole school Community Circle on the 12th.

HANDS-ON-AMANA GARDEN CLEAN-UP FOLLOWED BY PICNIC IN WILLS PARK |
Last year, Amana began its Learning Garden program as part of our overall STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathc) curriculum. We transformed the ornamental planters in front of the school to raised-bed garden plots, and used the in-ground beds along the facade of the building for fruit trees and vines and pollinator-friendly plants.
Second grade classes planted lettuces and cabbages, and our fledgling garden club planted tomatoes, broccoli and peas. Fourth grade classes added to the beauty of the garden with some perennial shrubs that will attract native pollinators.
Now it's time to prepare those same beds for fall planting so that this year's students can take advantage of the learning opportunities they provide. That's where you come in!
Join us on Saturday, September 13 from 9:00 AM until 12:00 PM for our first Hands On Amana day of the school year. We'll pull out plants that are no longer producing, pull weeds and clean up trash that might have collected in the beds. We'll also need a team to work behind the school cleaning up a section of our property that contains an overgrown concrete retention pond.
If you are available to help, please click here to sign up. We will work from 9 until Noon, and then gather in Wills Park for a bring-your-own picnic lunch. Amana will provide water and iced tea/lemonade.
