GOVERNANCE BOARD MEETING

Amana Academy's Governance Board will hold it's monthly public meeting on Saturday, August 23 from 9:00 AM until 11:00 AM in the Parent Center, located in suite 109A (between the school's main building and Satay House).

All meetings of the Amana Board are posted to our website calendar and open to the public unless designated as "executive session" where, by law, the Board must convene in private to discuss land, legal or personnel items. Any vote resulting from executive session discussion, however, will occur in an open public setting.
WANT TO SERVE AS AN
AMANA ACADEMY AMBASSADOR?
Are you passionate about Amana Academy's educational approach, and you want to learn more? Do you have good conversational or public speaking skills? Are you someone who likes to share positive stories with others?  Then you are the type of person we are looking for our Amana Ambassadors program!

Our 2020 Vision features a number of strategies and goals that will propel our students to greater heights, and along the way we want to make sure we are sharing their successes with the community. So go ahead, and sign-up by clicking here.

The first meeting will be held the week of September 1st, and an invitation will be sent to those who sign up.
WANT TO SERVE ON THE
HIGH SCHOOL CHARTER CREW?
Our school surveyed parents in May, 2014 to gauge their interest in an Amana-organized charter high school option. Nine out 10 respondents expressed support for this idea.

Given the results of the survey, school officials would like to pull together a team of parents to explore this idea further and determine if a charter petition should be pursued.

Please complete this form if you are interested in being a part of this crew.  The time commitment will be 2-3 meetings per month and/or research.

The first meeting will be held the week of September 1st, and an invitation will be sent to those who sign up.
UNIFORM UPDATE
It's hot outside now, but the colder weather is on the way and we're ready with a new addition to the dress code uniform! Introducing the zipper front sweater in navy from French Toast. The sweater may be ordered beginning next week and must have the Amana logo.

Amana's Uniform Dress Code will be fully enforced on the Elementary Campus beginning Monday, August 25th. Students who are not in appropriate dress code will be sent to the office to call their parent to bring them appropriate clothing. Reminder: All boys in grades K-8 must have their shirts tucked in and wear a black or brown belt.

Many of you have asked for clarification on the uniform policy around shoes. It was intended that students would wear a solid black or brown shoe on non-PE days, and that they wear a solid colored athletic shoe for PE on the days they had it. Since this was not made completely clear in the 2014-15 uniform policy, students will be allowed to wear any solid colored athletic shoe (including soles and decoration).   If you have purchased a solid black or brown athletic shoe, that shoe will suffice for both the uniform requirement and for PE.

Please note that we are moving toward making solid dark-colored shoes (black or brown) mandatory, except for PE (students may change out of uniform shoes for PE, but should put their uniform shoes back on after PE). This change will go into effect next school year. If you have already purchased shoes in a color other than black or brown for your student to wear, please send a note in to your child's teacher next week. Please direct any questions regarding the uniform policy to Ms. McClure for Elementary students and Ms. Campbell for Middle School students.
PLAY MINI GOLF WITH AMANA

It's time for the first Family Fun night of the year! Come play mini golf at The Fringe on Friday, August 22, at any time between 2:00 PM and Aurora Fringe Golf 4:30 PM. Don't forget to mention that you are with Amana. Amana gets 50% of the proceeds from every round of mini golf purchased.

USED UNIFORM AND SPIRIT WEAR SALE

PIE's Used Uniform committee held a successful sale at Open House. Thank you to all who purchased or donated!

Please continue to donate your gently used school uniforms. We want to be able to hold more sales and help more Amana families keep their kids in uniform. Laundered used uniforms can be placed in the used uniform bin located just inside the cafeteria doors.

Spirit Week is also coming soon! if you have not purchased your spirit wear yet, you can do so online at http://www.amana.deco-apparel.com. We will also be selling spirit wear at our table in the lobby on Friday, September 5th during dismissal. Cash and check will be accepted.

VOLUNTEER INTEREST FORMS

Have you submitted your Volunteer Interest Form for your child's class?

Thank you to all the parents or guardians that submitted the Volunteer Interest Form included in your Open House folder!

There are still some classrooms without a single volunteer, and FIFTEEN classrooms with fewer than two volunteers. But it's not too late! Please fill out the appropriate form below. If you have both elementary and middle school students, please fill out one of each.

Middle School Form

When parents volunteer in schools, student learning is impacted in a very positive way. We need as many parents as possible to lend their talents to help make Amana an even better school for all of our students. There is a way for everyone to contribute! From donating food or materials to supporting STEM activities and everywhere in between, at least a portion of your 10 volunteer hours can be completed through classroom support.

PIE ACTIVITY FEES

f you didn't get a chance to pay your PIE Activity Fee at Open House, you can still do so online. This year, the Activity Fee is only $20 per family. The Activity Fee funds events and activities that build school spirit and provide student enrichment throughout the year. For more information or to pay online, click here.

If you prefer, you can still pay by check. Make your check payable to "Amana Academy PIE" and include your child(ren)'s names in the memo. Then slide it into the PIE mailbox in the lobby or return it to your child's teacher.

For questions, contact Serene Taleb-Agha at pie.amana.secretary@gmail.com.

SAVE THE DATE FOR CURRICULUM NIGHTS!
Each year, Amana invites parents into the classroom to learn more about what their children will be learning during the school year.  This is your chance to dive into the curriculum with your child's teacher, ask questions and get answers.  We encourage all parents to attend.  The schedule for this year's curriculum nights is as follows:

August 26, 6:00 PM - 7:00 PM - Grades K-3 Curriculum Night
August 27, 6:00 PM - 7:00 PM - Grades 4-5 Curriculum Night
August 28, 6:00 PM - 7:00 PM - Grades 6-8 Curriculum Night

We look forward to seeing you there!
SAVE THE DATE FOR VOLUNTEER ORIENTATION
At Amana, our motto is We are Crew, Not Passengers. This applies to students, faculty, staff AND parents.  We are all part of the same crew, and that means we need everyone on board and involved from the very start.  To make this process easier for the parent members of our crew, we are offering some orientation sessions that coincide with curriculum nights this year.

Parents who volunteer in the classroom, or who want to serve as a chaperon on a field study, need to complete an Amana orientation session in addition to filling out the Volunteer Information Form and completing the state-required Mandated Reporter Training.  If you attend one of the three orientation sessions being offered immediately before curriculum nights, you can complete all three of these requirements at once.  We encourage as many parents as possible to take advantage of this opportunity.  The schedule is a follows:

August 26, 5:00 PM until 6:00 PM
August 27, 5:00 PM until 6:00 PM
August 28, 5:00 PM until 6:00 PM

If you are interested in attending a volunteer orientation (or even if you are interested in attending an orientation at a later date), please click here to RSVP
