AN IMPORTANT MESSAGE ABOUT CRCT
Dear Parents/Guardians,

All students in grades three through eight will take the Criterion Referenced Competency Tests (CRCT) from April 22 -28, 2014.  Amana will be operating on an alternative schedule during this time and K-8 lunches will be affected.  Please ask your child's teacher for details.

The Criterion Referenced Competency Tests are part of the required assessment program for the state of Georgia.  Students will be assessed on how well they have learned the content standards for their grade in five content areas (Reading, English/Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies).  All tests on the CRCT are multiple-choice and will provide both the school and parents with important information about the strengths and weaknesses of students in core academic areas.  The tests are based on the required state curriculum and are designed to measure the knowledge and skills taught and learned in Georgia classrooms.

It is important for your child to be at school on time each testing day.  Testing begins in our school at 8:15  AM.  Students will not be allowed to enter the testing room once testing has begun.  Students usually perform best when they take the test in a familiar environment.  If students are absent or tardy, make-up sessions may be administered in a location in the school where they are not accustomed to working.

Many parents ask how they can help prepare to prepare their child(ren) for testing.  Please stress to your child the importance of the test and doing his/her best.   All students have access to Study Island and OAS to practice content and test taking skills.  However, be careful not to create undue anxiety.  Students perform best when they are relaxed, when those around them have a positive attitude about the testing program and share confidence about the child's ability to do well.

Help is best served through ensuring that your child gets a good night's sleep every night and eats healthy, hearty breakfast each morning. Talk to your child about what he or she is learning in class, encourage him or her to read every night. Assist your child with homework and ensuring that he/she is completing all assignments. Help him/her to maintain good study habits, thinking skills, and a positive attitude during testing.  You will be notified of your child's performance once test results are received.  Thank you for your cooperation.  If you have any questions about the CRCT, please feel free to call me at 678.624.0989.

Sincerely,

Cherisse Campbell

Middle School Director/Amana Academy's Testing Coordinator

DO YOU PLAN TO SQUAWK & WALK
WITH US ON APRIL 19?

ARE YOU COMING??
Please take a moment to complete a short survey to let us know if you plan to attend the SQUAWK & WALK on April 19.  We need to gauge interest so that we'll know how much food to prepare and how many t-shirts to order.  We'd love for everyone to join us for the walk and chicken barbecue.  Remember, all proceeds benefit the Annual Fund at Amana, and Mar-Jac Poultry is matching the money we raise, up to $10,000!

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!
In order for this event to be truly successful, we need lots of volunteers to help.  This is a great way to earn hours toward your volunteer requirement, and to be involved with a worthwhile community event. Please take a minute to look at the Sign Up Genius and see if there's an area where you can help out.

If you're interested in helping plan this important event, please join us for our next planning meeting on Thursday, April 3 at 8:30 AM in the parent center.

EXPEDITIONARY LEARNING SCHOOL DESIGNER TO HOST CAFE CONVERSATIONS ON APRIL 18
Amana Academy is privileged to implement the Harvard-based Expeditionary Learning whole-school design model.  It is critical that parents understand this approach, therefore we encourage ALL parents, whether old or new, to attend a special Cafe Conversation with Donya Constantine, EL School Designer, on April 18th to learn about how Expeditionary Learning has evolved nationally and here at Amana Academy.  The session will start at 11:30 AM in the Parent Center; and we will leave plenty of time for Q&A before Arabic Community Circle at 12:30 PM.  See you there!
NOMINATE PIE OFFICERS FOR NEXT YEAR

PIE will hold elections for all offices on the PIE Executive Board at the PIE meeting on Tuesday, April 15 at 9 AM. The meeting will take place in the Parent Center in suite 109-A, located between the school main entrance and Satay House restaurant. Positions up for vote are: President, Vice President of School Support, Vice President of Programs, Secretary, and Treasurer. Come have your say for who will lead PIE for 2014-2015!

FIRST GRADE WINS ANNUAL CAMPAIGN PARTICIPATION CONTEST, GAINS OUT-OF-UNIFORM DAY
At the end of last semester, our first grade families made a big push to increase participation in the Annual Campaign; and, as a result, their grade topped out at almost 80% parent participation!  To reward their hard work and dedication, all students in first grade will get an out-of-uniform day on Friday, April 18.  First grade parents - please take a moment to familiarize yourselves with our out-of-uniform guidelines in preparation for that day.  CONGRATULATIONS, FIRST GRADE!!
PARTICIPATE IN EARTH HOUR ON SATURDAY

Amana Academy encourages its families to recreate Earth Hour each Saturday between now and Earth Day on April 22.  You should have received information in your child's Friday folder last week.  We'll keep a running tally of all of the families who participate each week, and on Earth Day we'll announce the collective impact we had on conserving water, power and other resources.
LOST AND FOUND TO BE DONATED
Parents, please take a moment in the next week and half to go through the lost and found clothing items as well as the eye glasses at the front desk. Any non-uniform items NOT picked up by Friday April 4th will be taken to North Fulton Community Charities for donation. Uniform items left in the Lost and Found will be donated to the PIE used uniform sale.

Lost and Found items will be brought to the lobby this Friday, April 4, for parents to look through during dismissal.   Eye glasses and miscellaneous items are behind the front desk and may be seen upon request.
SUPPORT AMANA WITHOUT PAYING A CENT!
Are you looking for easy--and inexpensive--ways to support your school? You can do it while you buy your groceries, or pay a utility bill. Learn how at the Indirect Fundraising table in the lobby this Friday at pick-up! You'll get information on how to get your local grocery store or gas company to donate to Amana. Don't forget to stop by!
AMANA CELEBRATES SCHOOL LIBRARY WEEK
