SQUAWK & WALK WITH US ON APRIL 19!

By now, all students should have received apledge form and letter for the first annual SQUAWK & WALK in Wills Park on April 19.  This is sure to be a fun activity for our families, staff, and community, so please be sure to participate in whatever way you can.  It's $15 per person to participate in the walk, which can be paid outright or collected in pledges from family and friends; if you wish to join us after the walk for the chicken barbecue, sponsored by Mar-Jac Poultry, meal tickets can be purchased ahead of time for $5, or for $7 on the day of the event.

In order for this event to be truly successful, we need lots of volunteers to help.  This is a great way to earn hours toward your volunteer requirement, and to be involved with a worthwhile community event. Please take a minute to look at the Sign Up Genius and see if there's an area where you can help out.

If you're interested in helping plan this important event, please join us for our next planning meeting on Thursday, April 3 at 8:30 AM in the parent center.

STRATEGIC PLANNING WORKSHOP AND
BOARD TOWN HALL MEETING
Join us this Thursday, March 27 at 6:00 PM for a Board Town Hall meeting and Strategic Planning Workshop session.  All meetings of the Amana Board are posted to our website calendar and open to the public unless designated as "executive session" where, by law, the Board must convene in private to discuss land, legal or personnel items. Any vote resulting from executive session discussion, however, will occur in an open public setting.

At this meeting, the Board will introduce its two newest members, Ms. Crystal Canaday and Dr. Kristen Person-Ramey. Following the Town Hall portion of the meeting, there will be a Strategic Planning Workshop, where we will work together to build a draft version of Amana's next 5-year plan.  This process will be informed by the information gathered at the focus group meetings that have been held over the last month.
PARTICIPATE IN EARTH HOUR ON SATURDAY

This Saturday, March 29, from 8:30 PM until 9: 30 PM is Earth Hour. According to the Earth Hour website, "Earth Hour is a worldwide grassroots movement uniting people to protect the planet, and is organised by WWF. Engaging a massive mainstream community on a broad range of environmental issues, Earth Hour was famously started as a lights-off event in Sydney, Australia in 2007. Since then it has grown to engage more than 7000 cities and towns worldwide, and the one-hour event continues to remain the key driver of the now larger movement."

Amana Academy encourages its families to participate in Earth Hour this Saturday, and plans to go a step further by asking everyone to recreate Earth Hour each Saturday between now and Earth Day on April 22.  Be on the lookout for information to come home in your child's Friday folder.  We'll keep a running tally of all of the families who participate each week, and on Earth Day we'll announce the collective impact we had on conserving water, power and other resources.

ATLANTA SCIENCE FESTIVAL

The Atlanta Science Festival Expo will be occurring next Saturday 3/29 11am - 4 pm at Centennial Olympic Park. It is a free and amazing opportunity for families to get out and experience some high quality science. When Amana students register at the event, they are registering to win $400 for their grade's science classroom. We would love for all Amana students to attend this wonderful educational event.  Check out the Science Festival website for more information about other events that are going on throughout the city.
