BOARD MEETING - MEET & GREET NOMINEES
Amana Academy's Governing Board will host its monthly public meeting on Saturday, February 22 from 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM in the Parent Center.  At this meeting, there will be a "meet and greet" with the Amana Academy board nominees.

All meetings of the Amana Board are posted to our website calendar and open to the public unless designated as executive session where, by law, theBoard must convene in private to discuss land, legal or personnel items. Any vote resulting from executive session discussion, however, will occur in an open public setting.

HANDS ON AMANA FOR NEW LEARNING GARDEN
We hope you are as excited as we are about our new
Learning Garden project!  Follow our progress by visiting our Learning Garden website.

Join us for a Hands On Amana service day on Saturday, February 22 from 11AM until 4PM.  We will be preparing beds in front of the school for planting, as well as spreading wood chips behind the school for a raised-bed garden out back.  To volunteer for this project, please click here.
BE A PART OF AMANA'S STRATEGIC PLANNING PROCESS!
As we start a new charter term, our Board wants to update our strategic plan to reflect our goals for the next five years, and we need your input.  Over the next few weeks, we will be conducting a series of focus group meetings, and it's very important that we have strong attendance and participation from our parent community.  We invite everyone to come and give your thoughts on what's important for the future at Amana.  Please take a look at the following schedule and mark your calendars with these important dates (refreshments and childcare will be provided):

Thursday, February 27 at 6:00 PM - Focus Group Meeting for parents of students in grades 6-8

Thursday, March 6 at 6:00 PM - Focus Group Meeting for parents of students in grades K-2

Thursday, March 13 at 6:00 PM - Focus Group Meeting for parents of students in grades 3-5

After these initial focus group meetings, we will conduct a public strategic planning workshop on Thursday, March 27 at the Board Town Hall Meeting.

All meetings will be held in the Parent Center, located in suite 109B, between the main building and Satay House.
FAMILY FUN SKATE NIGHT, PLUS PIZZA HUT RESCHEDULED

On Friday, February 21st, from 3:00 PM - 5:00 PM we are roller skating at The Cooler!  Yes they have a roller skating rink! Come and join the fun! Don't forget your socks and get there early because skates are first come first served. You need the coupon from your Family Fun Newsletter to get the special Amana rate ($7 per skater including skate rental) but don't worry, I will have extras at the door!

Rescheduled due to snow: Our Pizza Hut Family Fun'd Day has been rescheduled to next Thursday, February 27th! It is an ALL DAY fundraiser and all you need to enjoy great pizza and help Amana is a Fundraiser Voucher. You can pick one up in the lobby beginning next week  or there will be some available at Pizza Hut on the 27th!

For questions, please contact Melissa Blalock at mwblalock@gmail.com

SPIRIT WEAR DAY IN OBSERVANCE OF GEORGIA ARBOR DAY
Tomorrow, February 21, is an Amana Spirit Wear day in observance of Georgia Arbor Day.  While National Arbor Day is the third Friday in April, it is too warm at that time of the year to plant trees in Georgia. Trees should be planted between November and mid-March so they will have a better chance of becoming established before the onset of summer heat. Visit The Georgia Grove to find out how you can plant trees to commemorate special life moments and leave a lasting legacy for future generations.
HELP TALA BUDEIR COLLECT ART SUPPLIES FOR SYRIAN CHILDREN
Tala Budeir is a 2nd grade student at Amana Academy. She presented a TEDxYouthDay talk last fall at TEDxAmanaAcademy on Syria.  Her talk connected with the EL Design Principle of Empathy and Caring. Tala believes that art can help the Syrian children feel happy.  She has started an art supplies collection at Amana Academy.  Art supplies like crayons, sketchbooks, coloring pencils, markers etc.. can be donated from now until the end of the month into specified containers. Tala has gotten support from a number of people outside of Amana Academy as well. Her project is being supported by Maria Zulfiquar, an Amana Academy alum! For more information please see her TED talk: http://www.ted.com/tedx/events/8484
SUPPORT THE AMANA BALD EAGLES!

The bold and brave (2nd grade student) Finley Link is ready to put his team of kids together for his St. Baldrick's  campaign. Mr. Jaleel and Ms. Stanton have agreed to shave their heads (on March 9th) with the students who join Finley's team-The Amana Bald Eagles!

If you or your student wants to join please go to our team page
http://www.stbaldricks.org/teams/mypage/90475/2014, then click on the "Join Us" button.  Once you register on the website, the organization sends you a pile of brochures to hand out.

Most donations can be done directly through the website, but they also send you an envelope for cash and one for checks that you turn in at the event itself.  You also get your own personal fundraising page, and from there you can post to facebook or e-mail folks.  Donations can be made to the team or to an individual on the team.

Any individual donations count towards the team goal.
