SPIRIT WEAR DAY GUIDELINES |
Next Friday, September 20, is Amana's very first Spirit Wear Day! The school's administration has set aside one day per month, usually centered around an environmental or social awareness day, for students to wear their spirit wear and show their Amana pride. Next Friday will be in observance of the Clean Up the World Campaign, which is the third weekend in September.
Students and staff are encouraged to wear Amana spirit wear, which can be ordered online at: www.amana.deco-apparel.com. In order to have spirit wear before next Friday, the deadline for ordering is this coming Friday, September 13. You can still order after that date, but the shirts won't be ready in time for September 20.
Students who do not yet have Amana spirit wear will still get an out-of-uniform day on September 20. The guidelines for out-of-uniform days are as follows:
On out-of-uniform days students are expected to be dressed appropriately and modestly and maintain the level of personal hygiene and safety necessary to ensure a healthy school environment. Students are to refrain from any mode of dress which is distracting to classroom instruction or which contributes to the disruption of the normal function of the school. Amana Academy complies with the Dress Code of Fulton County Schools.
The following types of clothing are considered inappropriate at Amana:
- Shorts and skirts that are too short: Note: Style and material may make certain garments inappropriate even at appropriate length.
- Pajamas, boxer shorts, slippers and cut-off sweat pants.
- Spandex shorts or leggings worn alone, or without a garment of appropriate length.
- Shirts or blouses that expose the midriff; "see-through" garments.
- Clothing which advertises alcohol or substances that are illegal for minors or display suggestive phrases, designs, markings, or profanities.
- Tank tops, strapless tops without wearing a jacket, and some thin, strapped tops when too much skin is exposed.
- Shirts or blouses with elongated arm openings or opened in the front or sides without an undershirt.
- Students are not to wear caps, hats, bandannas, sweat bands, or other head coverings during the school day. Upon arrival at school students should place these items in their lockers and take them out only when leaving the campus. Students who wear hats during the school day will have them confiscated.
- Pants with holes in them, unfastened belts, exposed underwear.
- Clothing that displays weapons, violence, gang affiliations, or other logos that cause dissension.
- Chains are not allowed.
School Administration will make the interpretation of what is acceptable dress. Students who are judged to be inappropriately dressed will be allowed to change clothes, to call parents for a change of clothes, or call for permission to go home to change clothes and return to school. Classes missed will be unexcused.

GRANDPARENTS DAY, COPY ROOM AND MORE!
If you are looking for a way to get involved as a parent volunteer at Amana, here are some great opportunities.
Our Grandparents Day event on 9/27 needs parent help to make it a success. Check out the sign-up genius here and contribute just a few hours. This is a great opportunity if you are not looking for a long-term commitment.
The Copy Room is looking for volunteers to make photocopies for teacher and staff use. Slots are available in two-hour chunks, Tuesday through Thursday, 9:00 AM - 1:00 PM. Training is provided. Sign up here, or contact Michelle Bard at LeedesLady@aol.com with questions.
Do you like gathering news or taking photos? Would you enjoy writing short articles about PIE events in the Amana Journal? If so, you'd be a great addition to our Newsletter committee. Contact Serene Taleb-Agha at pie.amana.secretary@gmail.com if you're interested.
We're also looking for a group of volunteers willing to attend Amana events and take video footage for the school's archives and for possible future use in informational videos about Amana. Training will be provided. Please contact Niki Fox at nfox@amanaacademy.org to learn more.

SCHOOL GARDEN BRAINSTORMING SESSION |
Calling all Amana parents who want to help during the early stages of planning the Amana Community Garden. There will be an informal brainstorming session this Friday, September 13 at Noon (before Friday dismissal) in the Eagles Landing Cafe (suite 111 - just to the right of the school).
Do you have gardening experience or contacts in the gardening/landscaping industry? Or do you just have a passion for good, locally grown food? Do you like digging in the dirt? Then this meeting is for you. We want to know your thoughts, and get your input as we begin planning what is sure to be an important part of Amana's future.
|
Chess Club, which meets Fridays at 1:30, still has some openings. If your child is interested, please email Stephen Schneider at chess@championshipchess.net.
In the subject line, please put Amana Chess; in the body of the email, include your child's name and grade. Once enough people have signed up, you will be directed to an online registration and payment site.
