Dear Amana Families:
For the past several months, a committee of school parents, staff, administration and Governance Board members have been working to complete Amana's Charter Renewal Application, which is due to the Fulton County Board of Education and the Georgia Department of Education on September 20, 2013. Amana's current charter, which was renewed in 2008, expires in 2014. The Charter Renewal Application will allow the school to continue operating as a Fulton County Public Charter School for another five years.
For the past two weeks, a working draft of the charter petition has been available for public comment on our website, and a public Town Hall Board Meeting was held on August 24 where questions and comments related to the Charter Renewal Application were taken in a public forum. A video of that discussion is available in the Adminstrative offices of the school.
Taking those comments into consideration, the final PDF version of the Charter Renewal Application is posted on our website. As part of the required procedure, Amana Academy must make this application available to our parent community, and a "yes" or "no" vote must be taken.
Voting on the Charter Renewal Application will begin on Friday, August 6 and run each school day through Friday, August 13 from 7:30 AM until 6:30 PM in the lobby of the school. One vote per family will be allowed, and voting is anonymous. You will need to check in and initial next your family's name when you come in to vote. This is so that we can enforce the one-vote-per-family rule.
In order for our petition to be accepted, we must receive a majority of "yes" votes among those families that vote on the Charter Renewal Application. Please encourage all Amana families to vote on this important application. This Charter document will govern Amana Academy for the next five years, and it is essential that it be renewed in order for the school to continue operations.

PIE GENERAL MEETING - SEPTEMBER 10
|
The next PIE General Body meeting will be held on Tuesday, September 10 from 6:00 PM until 7:00 PM in the school's cafeteria. As a reminder, meetings will alternate each month between afternoons and evenings in order to accommodate the greatest number of parents. All parents, teachers and staff are welcome to attend. We look forward to seeing you there! |
If you missed the Clubs Expo last week, you still have a chance to learn about our school's 30 clubs! Just visit our website to learn more.
There is a mix of competitive academic teams, sports clubs, and recreational clubs. It's the most comprehensive clubs offering in Amana's history!
Research has shown that after-school activities help youth develop social skills, improve academic performance, and help them build strong supportive relationships with adults other than their parents. Young children benefit especially from the social skills development and improved academic skills. This leads to improved conflict management and better school attendance.
Middle-school aged youth who continue to participate in after-school activities are more likely to be engaged in school and attentive in class. Participation in after-school activities continues to be a benefit for students right through high school. Adolescents in after-school programs are optimistic for the future and have more interest in school than peers who are unsupervised after school.
Encourage your child to participate in a club today and contact the club organizers of your choice!

The Birthday Book Club honors member students' birthdays with a book. Each selected birthday book will have a nameplate with the students's name and birthday. The librarian-selected Birthday Books will be available for $20 each through September. Birthday Book Club participants will be the first to check out his or her birthday book.
Visit the media center to see these specially-selected titles, and purchase one today to honor your child on their special day! |
