BUS SERVICE INFORMATION

Dear Parents,

While not required of start-up charter schools, we believe it is important that we make available bus service to our families for a number of reasons including student safety, reduced impact on the environment, better management of carpool, and less stress on families. These past few years we have enjoyed the flexibility of determining our own bus routes and managing the service through contracted service providers.  However, Fulton County Schools (FCS) Transportation Department informed us and the System's other start-up charter schools of new requirements that impact how our bus service will be managed going forward per the following.

We will no longer be contracting with Stancil Bus Service for our transportation needs. FCS Transportation is requiring charter schools to use bus service providers from their approved vendor list. Stancil Bus Service is not yet an approved vendor, and the approval process is lengthy. The new requirements also put us in a position where we will be unable to provide service using our ownbus.

We have thus entered into an agreement with Fulton County Transportation to provide our bus service starting Tuesday, August 13.  They are making available to us 3 buses. They have also determined the bus stop locations within a predefined transportation zone based on the highest concentration of students.  Unfortunately, Amana Academy does not have the ability to change the transportation zone (we apologize we will no longer be able to serve the Windward Home Depot stop).

The Fulton County defined bus stops - based on highest concentration of students - are provided below.  A student is not required to reside in the city or nearby neighborhood of the bus stop.  If you are interested in having your child ride the bus during Fall Semester, please click here to complete our Bus Rider Application Form.

If we receive more interest than seats on the buses, then we will conduct a lottery on Friday, August 9 at 10 AM in the lobby.  Families of students who are selected will be notified the same day, so they can prepare for service on Tuesday, August 13.

IMPORTANT NOTE:  Bus Service will start on Tuesday, August 13. Only students who are selected from the lottery will have the privilege of riding the bus.  An adult MUST be present when the school bus arrives to pick up students in the morning and an adult MUST be present in the afternoon for drop-off. The bus driver will return a student to the school in the afternoon if an adult is not present to pick up a child.  Individual ridership will be considered a privilege, and can be withdrawn due to disciplinary issues or if the student(s) do not ride the bus consistently.  Any seats that are forfeited will be given to wait-listed students.

AFTER SCHOOL ENRICHMENT PROGRAM INFORMATION

Dear Parents,

Welcome to the 2013-2014 school year.  We are looking forward to an exciting and enriched after-school experience.  Enrollment documentation for the Afterschool Program is available on the Amana Academy website, under the After School Activities Tab - Afterschool Care.  If you would like to enroll your children in this program please complete the forms(5) and return them to me by mail at, 285 Main Street, Alpharetta, GA  30009 Attn: Ayesha Haddad, or email at, ahaddad@amanaacademy.org. Forms can be found on our website - click here to access.

Payment is due on the first business day of the month.  For the month of August that date is 8/13/13, however you may send your payment in with your enrollment documentation or drop it off at the school prior to that date.  A mail box for Afterschool is located in the school lobby.  Also, if your account currently has an unpaid balance your child is ineligible to participate in the program until/unless arrangements have been made to satisfy the balance.

Please note that your child(ren) will only be able to stay in the program for the number of days selected.   If your child is in a club or Non-ASEP activity it is your responsibility to make arrangements for your child(ren) to be picked up at the end of the club daily and at the end of the session(s).  If you would like to have your child(ren) attend the program after their club is over you will need to include those days in his/her or their schedule.  Please contact me with any questions, concerns or suggestions.   I am looking forward to working with you in making this a great experience for your child(ren).

SCHOOL SUPPLIES INFORMATION

Welcome back, Parents and Students,

Did you know that August 9 and 10 are tax-free holidays in Georgia?  That's a great time to stock up on your school supplies (for a list of tax-exempt items, click here).

As you are looking through the supply lists (click here to view a pdf of the 13-14 Student Supply Lists), please note that the items at the top of the list for your grade level are personal items for your child.  Please label them with your child's name.

The items listed at the bottom of each page for the Elementary grades for Specials and Connections are items to be used in those classes only, and will be used communally by all students in those classes (students in the middle grades will keep their supplies for these classes in their lockers).  If there are no quantities listed next to an item, please use your discretion and purchase one or more of each item.

SUMMER READING LOGS AND STUDY GUIDES DUE

As a reminder, Summer Reading Logs and Study Guides are due on the first day of school. You should have received this information at the end of May, and it has been available on our website all summer.

Summer shouldn't mean taking a break from learning, especially reading. Studies show that most students experience a loss of reading skills over the summer months, but children who continue to read actually gain skills. Efforts should be made during the summer to help children sustain reading skills, practice reading and read for enjoyment.

Reading builds visualization, thinking and language abilities. Taking the time to read with your child can help your child's reading skills. When children are encouraged to choose good books that appeal to them, a love of reading is likely to follow.

Amana Academy expects all elementary students to read during the summer. The suggested list for summer reading is not exclusive but attempts to provide choices for various reading abilities and interests.

Elementary Summer Reading Requirement

Students should have kept a reading log over the summer of all books read (click here to access the suggested reading lists and the reading log template). The required information includes:

  • Author Name
  • Book Title
  • Reflection - would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
  • Parents Initials

Middle Grades Summer Reading Requirement

  • Complete the Summer Reading Study Guide for Independent Reading for book(s) you read (click here to access the Middle Grades suggested reading lists and Study Guides).
  • Turn the log into your ELA teacher upon your return in August.
  • Participate in an assigned a book talk about your summer book that will last 3-5 minutes. The learning target will be to motivate peers to read the book, thus providing another opportunity to create a community of literacy. The book talk will be counted as two (2) class work grades. Students will be given the specific book talk expectations when you return to school and talks will be assessed using a rubric.

Completed reading logs (for Elementary Grades) and Reading Study Guides (for Middle Grades) are due August 13, 2013 for a grade. Reading logs can be accessed by clicking on the feather below next to Noticings & Wonderings.
