Pacific Masters Swimming Coaches NewsletterIssue No. 20

Greetings!

If this is your first Coaches newsletter, welcome! If you know a Pacific Masters coach that might not be receiving our email, feel free to forward this to them.

Our goal this year is to continue providing local opportunities for coach education, outreach and connection. If you have questions or concerns about Pacific Masters policy, please feel free to contact us (Stu - [email protected] or Mary - [email protected]) and we can help answer questions or direct you to someone who can.

-----------  Upcoming clinics -----------

Coaches - do some of your swimmers need help with their starts and turns before the big meets? Are they bent-legged or losing their goggles on that start or executing their flip turns in slow motion? Come join us and bring some swimmers to this Pac Masters Starts & Turns clinic which will take place at Civic Center Poo land runs from 10:30-3:00 pm. It is lead by Coaches Stu & Mary Kahn (Davis Aquatic Masters) and Coach Cokie Lepinski (Swymnut Masters).

There will be a video presentation covering all aspects of dive starts, back starts and each of the turns. We then head to the pool where swimmers will rotate through two stations, each about 60 minutes long. The stations will be dive starts & back starts, and  flip turns & open turns. We'll need a lot of coach support on deck that day. We'd love to see as many of you as possible. This clinic is conveniently scheduled three weeks before the short course Nationals meet in Santa Clara. You and your swimmers will be well prepped!

Coaches attend free (just need to be a masters coach with a Pac Masters registered team). Members of Davis Aquatic Masters attend for $20 and all other masters swimmers pay $30 (check or cash, check payable to Davis Aquatic Masters). To register as a coach or swimmer, contact Mary Kahn at [email protected] or 530-400-1860.

2014 Pacific Masters Swim Clinics

This next year, we are continuing our series of 4-hour instructional clinics which will be offered throughout various geographical regions of our LMSC. Six very successful clinics were offered in 2013 to over 150 swimmers and 30 coaches. There is no cost for the coaches to attend. Host teams can charge a nominal fee for swimmers and retain all proceeds.

Clinic offerings will be either long axis, short axis or starts/turns. Coaches will have two hours in the classroom and then head to the pool deck where they will work with swimmers to identify and correct stroke deficiencies.

The clinics will be lead by veteran coaches from Pacific Masters. If you'd like a clinic in your area and/or you're interested in being a presenting coach (Pacific Masters pays a stipend of $200), contact us at coaches@pacificmasters.org

-----------  USMS Coaches Information -----------

On Deck Coaching at Nationals

At each USMS Nationals meet, recognized member coaches volunteer to direct the daily warm-ups prior to the start of each morning session (7:00-8:15 a.m.) The coaches wear easy-to-see COACH shirts and assist in organizing lanes for general warm-up; including overseeing the 65+ lane, maintaining right-of-way in the sprint lanes and helping with racing starts. In return, coaches on deck receive a hospitality pass for each day they volunteer. Look for more information and an electronic sign-up link in the next USMS Streamlines for Coaches.

USMS Coaches Committee
The USMS Coaches Committee exists to educate and support the coaches of masters teams. They have conference calls each month to help exchange ideas and work toward goals. One of which is to improve communication with all our coaches across the U.S. By sharing the minutes of the meetings, other coaches can gain some insights into the projects being working on and goals being worked toward. If you are interested, click here for the meeting minutes
