A busy week coming up
Sadly we are reporting that Fig Garden Swim Club member Dewey Slater passed away at the US Masters Swimming Long Course Championships. [see below ]
As a PacMasters extra, the Sierra Nevada Masters story is told by Kate Eby. The Sierra Nevada Masters have been running the popular Donner Lake Swim and Reno winners meet. Their sold out Donner Lake swim is this weekend.
Long distance swimmer Lynn Cox is in San Francisco speaking at the South End Rowing Club and The Sports Basement. She will be promoting her book Open Water Swimming Manual: An Expert's Survival Guide for Triathletes and Open Waters Swimmers. [ see below ]
For our competitors, there are still open water meets left this season and next week begins the short course meters season.

Dewey Slater Fig Garden Swimmer
1948-2013
Fig Garden Swim Team Member, Louis "Dewey" Slater died Wednesday, 7 August 2013 after suffering an apparent heart attack while competing in the United States Masters Swimming Long Course Championships being held in Mission Viejo, California.
Dewey was on the last lap of the 1500 Free when he stopped swimming. The lifeguards immediately pulled him out, he was treated at the pool then transported to Mission Hospital Regional Medical Center where died. Fig Garden Coach Jay Christianson said that Dewey was a gentleman and coach. He would start swimming at 6:00am and would work with other swimmers who would be swimming at that time. Dewey loved to swim the mile - he couldn't go faster than a 31 for the 50 but he could do that all day. "He was a great man."
Dewey is survived by his wife, Marie, two children, two grandchildren and his teammates. A funeral service is scheduled to Temple Beth Israel, Fresno 11:30am Tuesday 13 August. Sierra Nevada Masters Across the Lake and the Border
The Donner Lake Swim, scheduled for August 17, 2013 is one of the longest swims held during the Open Water season and it's what Sierra Nevada Masters is best known for. The swim begins on the east end of Donner Lake and ends on the west beach, almost three miles away. "It's a unique swim. It has a unique distance. It has a unique challenge with the altitude of the swim and cold water, which, I think, draws people in," says Laura Harsh, who's served as Race Director for almost a decade.

PacMasters Open Water Donner Lake Entries Close
The Thirty-Third Donner Lake Open Water Swim will be held on Saturday 17 August 2013. The 2.7 mile straight course is one of the most popular in the Pacific Masters season and always sells out. All the spots have been filled and they are accepting no more entires.

PacMasters Short Course Meters Modesto
The MAAC Summer Short Course Meters Meet is the first meet of the short course meters season. This very well attended meet has sold out over the past couple of years (entry is capped at 120 swimmers) , so if you want to swim in it, you must enter early. This meet starts at 9am and is usually over by 1pm. [ Registration ]

Whiskeytown Lake Open Water Swim
The Redding Swim Club is organizing its Whiskeytown Open Water Swim. The date is 8 September 2013 at Whiskeytown Lake about 10 miles west of Redding. There is a one and two mile swim at the lake. [ Registration ]

PacMasters Start and Turns
The Pacific Masters and Mountain View Masters is hosting a Starts and Turns clinic at Mountian View's Eagle pool on Saturday 7 September. The clinic is for both coaches and swimmers.
For the non-competitive swimmer, besides learning or updating a skill that is used primarily at meets, a more efficient flip turn will help improve your practices/
The clinic will cover dive starts, backstroke starts, flip turns and open turns. The clinic is led byUSMS 2012 Coach of the Year Stu Kahn; also coaching will be Mary Kahn, Chris Campbell and Cokie Lepinski
