2011

2001- 2010

Greetings!

First let me wish you all a
   Happy New Year
It is amazing how fast the years keep going by. Now is the time to set our goals for 2013. Be sure to write them down and tell your friends what you wish to accomplish.

Coach of the Year

It is almost time to start selecting the 2013 Pacific Masters Coach of the Year. It is a way for your club to honor your coach by nominating them for the Coach of the Year award. The rules are in the Pacific Masters Guide to Operations, but on the coaches page there is a summary of what needs to be done and the criteria used. One important item is that it is one nomination letter along with a maximum of four support letters. The more criteria  items that you cover in your nomination letter, the higher the ranking when reviewing the coaches.

Registration: Yes, that old bugaboo. If you plan on swimming with your team after the first of January, you must be registered with US Masters Swimming for your insurance to be in effect. Team representatives can look at the registration web site to see who is registered. Pacific Masters has about 4,600 members registered for 2013.

The Update comes out about 40 times a year, it was created to remind swimmers of what is coming up, what deadlines are nearing and to have some information about PacMasters. It is usually very time sensitive, which sometimes means that there are typos that do not get caught before being sent out. The mistakes and typos are mine, but I would like to thank Bob Leuten of San Mateo who has helped with the Update to minimize errors.

Again Happy New Year.

Fun, Fitness & Competition

Kind regards,

-michael

Fitness Logs
By being a member of United States Masters Swimming one of the benefits to have access of the USMS Fitness Logs (FLOGS) where you can keep track of the exercise that you do for fitness. It is fairly simple, you just write down what you have done that day.

If you want you can use the FLOGs to participate in the Go The Distance event, where your yardage is compared with others in your age group, but it is not a requirement.
400 Kick for Time - still time to enter
The MEMO swimmers are organizing a new postal event - the 400 kick for Time. A swimmer uses a kick board, no stroking into a wall and no flip turns. You must kick for time during the month of December - no stroking into the wall and no flip turns
Flower Power Meet
The first Flower Power Meet will be held at the indoor Santa Rosa Community College Pool in downtown Santa Rosa. This is the first meet of the year and the first pool meet in the North Bay Area in a long time. [ Registration ]
NorCal Coaches Clinic
Pac Masters has budgeted for 10 scholarships up to $100 each for qualified Pac Masters coaches to attend the Pacific Swim Coaches Clinic held in Napa, January 3-6, 2013. Basic registration is currently $99 for Sunday only; $115 for both Saturday & Sunday. Registration prices rise after January 1st.

To be reimbursed, coaches will need to send in proof of registration payment and proof of attendance (the ID card given when they check in suffices). Contact Coach Cokie Lepinski - for scholarship information. Specific information on the clinic including a registration link can be found at: http://www.swimshop.com/pages.php?pageid=13    .

For those who register early US Masters Swimming sponsors are offering discounts on their products. This is a great time to get that new suit or to purchase a swimming "toy" to try out.

When registering, please consider making a donation to the International Swimming Hall of Fame and the USMasters Swimming Swimming Saves Lives Foundation. The Hall of Fame is the repository of all things swimming - it is a great pleasure to visit when you are in Ft Lauderdale. Swimming Saves Lives  directly support programs that are providing opportunities for adults to swim-adults who might not otherwise have opportunities.

The Olympic Club
The City Mile
This year there are two meets just for the distance swimmer - This is a great time for the distance swimming, open water swimmer and triathlete, to see where they are in their training cycle, or to swim that distance event and not have to worry about the next day's events at championships.

The first meet is The Olympic Club 1500, which is held at the club's downtown pool. As it is a meters meet, everyone aged up on 1 January - and if your birth year ends in a 3 or 8, you are in a new age group. The pool is very fast and there have been numerous world records set there. [ Registration ]

This year a new meet - The City Mile, will be at the City College of San Francisco new natatorium. This is the only 1650 that will be contested outside of PacMasters Championships.[ Registration ]

Both pools have limited entries, so it would be good to enter as soon as possible.
14th Fog City Masters Quadrathon
The 14th Annual Fog City Masters Quadrathon will be at the Herbst Natatorium on the St Ignatius College Prep campus. The meet is all free style - 50-100-200- 500.  [ Registration ]
Salinas Valley
The first Salinas Valley Aquatics Masters Splash and Dash SCY meet will be held 2 February 2013. The new meet will be at the Salinas Aquatic Center. The meet has all the 50 and 100's, the 100 and 200 IM and the 500 Free. [ Registration ]

Help needed with the
Pacific Masters Website

The Pacific Masters website is one of the oldest Masters swimming websites as it was launched in 1995. There are over 2,000 pages on the site. Currently we use Dreamweaver to create the templates and organize the site.

We would like to make some changes to the base template and we would like to add a couple of database features to the site. We think we have a good base idea for the update, but would be open to design modifications.

If you are interested, please contact Michael Moore for further information. This is a compensated job.

Updated Pacific Masters
Guide to Operations

The Pacific Masters Guide to Operations which contains our bylaws and governing documents has been updated (there were a few changes voted at the Annual Meeting) is posted on our website. It does cover how we operate, our annual awards, bylaws and grievance procedures.

Thanks to Peter Guadagni who updated the document with the voted on changes.
