Greetings! This past week United States Masters Swimming held its annual convention in Greensboro, North Carolina. Members of Pacific Masters received many national awards, Stu Kahn was named the 2012 United States Masters Swimming Coach of the Year. Four of our coaches received a national coaching award and three of our volunteers received a national volunteer award - see below.
Jim Miller, MD gave a presentation on the prevention of shoulder injuries in aquatic sport. It seems that shoulder injuries are frequently suffered by swimmers, and the FINA Sports Medicine Committee strongly endorses prevention as the key to the issue. A video on prevention is on the FINA web site .
Jim Clemmons was re-elected as the At-Large Board of Director from the Oceana Zone. He will serve a two year term.
The 2014 One Mile Open Water National Championships will be held at Lake Berryessa on 7 June 2014.
There were about 30 Pacific Masters members who traveled to the convention to represent PacMasters. Thank you to all for contributing their time and energy for Masters Swimming
Enjoy the warm weather.
Fun, Fitness & Competition
Kind regards,
-michael

Boreyko, Edmonds, Olson and Schuster are honored coaches
Valery Boreyko (USF), Tim Edmonds (Stanford), Kurt Olson (MAAC) and Laura Schuster (MVM) received the Kerry O'Brien Award at the United States Masters Swimming 2012 convention. [snippets from the nominations ]
The U.S. Masters Swimming Coaches Committee initiated a new award in 2008 with the goal of recognizing USMS registered coaches who are building our membership in communities throughout our country. Originally named the Grass Roots Coaching Award, it has been renamed to honor Coach Kerry O'Brien of Walnut Creek Masters, who embodies the passion, dedication, and heart that these coaches bring to the pool deck. It is with the efforts of individuals like these that U.S. Masters Swimming will most certainly move to a greater level.

Alan Liu Meet
Every year, Mountain View Masters organizes a fundraiser for Jill Mason and swimmers far and wide have graciously donated to support Jill.
This year, instead of raising funds specifically for Jill, Jill has asked us to donate to MADD- Mothers Against Drunk Driving.
Jill is participating in a walk for MADD on Oct. 6 in Sacramento, and through this walk, we show our support for tougher laws against drunk driving and our never-ending sense of loss that a drunk driver has caused. So, to honor Jill and Alan, please donate to MADD.
Brief History Alan Liu was Mountain View Master's head coach back in early 2000-2004 and Jill Mason was a swimmer w/ MVM. On Easter Morning, April 11, 2004, Alan & Jill were hit by a drunk driver while riding their bikes in Santa Rosa while visiting Alan's mom. Alan was killed instantly. Jill was also hit and her spinal cord was severed and is permanently paralyzed from the waist down. We continue to honor Alan's memory and support Jill every year thru this amazing meets.
