Greetings! Long Course Championships are this weekend at the hilltop campus of the College of San Mateo. You can follow the meet on the Pacific Masters web site. In about a week and a half our Open Water Championships are to be contested at Donner Lake. Next month, Redding will have a swim pentathlon on the same weekend as Whiskeytown Lake swim.
It was great fun watching the swimming events in the Olympics. Now, besides synchro and water polo, time to watch the canoeing (c-1 and c-2) and kayaking (k-1 and k-2) and of course the most important event beach volleyball - large screen - high def.
The Wall Street Journal had an article about the difficulty of adults learning to swim. Many of us learned as children, yet we have husbands, wives, brothers and sisters who cannot swim. Swimming is a skill we should all know.
Enjoy the summer.
Fun, Fitness & Competition
Kind regards,
-michael

Video of the Week
KPIX did a nice feature on on Tim Birnie being inducted into the International Masters Swimming Hall of Fame.
Besides honoring Tim, the feature also tells a lot about Masters swimming.

Pacific Masters swim The Channel
The Relay: San Mateo Masters Miya Oto, Randy Brown, Joel Swartz, and Gabor Lengyel will join friends Mike Spalding and Joel's swam the English Channel, not just one way, they made the round trip. They swam from Dover to Calais, France and then returened.
This is an amazing challenge that only 1000 swimmers have accomplished. More people have climbed Mt Everest than have swum the English Channel! Their biggest challenges were be the weather and conditions of the water.
Swimmers are not allowed to wear wet suits. Their total time was 24 hrs and 2min!! They dedicated their return swim to John Caughlin, which made it even more awesome. We will be waiting for their return to the US, so they can share their pictures and juicy details.
Congratulations to the 'fabulous 6'!!!
The solo swimmer:
TAM swimmer Adam Engelskirchen communicated with his training buddies at TAM and NBA: "Just a quick note before I collapse: no thanks to wind that rose over the day (instead of dropping off, as was forecast), I completed the English Channel swim. My time was 13:50 and I was greeted at the finish by about 20 French beach-goers who actually applauded! "I am tired and sore, but also safe and satisfied. "Thanks to everyone for all the good wishes and encouragement! "

Whiskeytown Open Water Redding Swim Meet
Whiskeytown Lake is just outside Redding so plan to drive up the day before. This is a beautiful lake. There's a nice shady picnic area and beach so bring the family. This event is in the early fall and the weather can be either chilly or hot. The lake is a bit cooler than Berryessa (think mid to high 60's). If you plan to do both the 1- and 2-mile events, be prepared to feel a little cold at the start of the 2-mile. Post event snacks.
For those who would like to drive up the day earlier, Redding is having a Short Course Yards Pentathlon. The Meet will start at 11am, so bay area swimmers can leave early to drive up there.

Hot August Chill
The Hot August Chill is 19 August at Donner Lake. The One mile swim is the Pacific Masters Championships. Donner Lake is a beautiful place to just swim.
