Community groups praise SF's "solutions,
not scapegoating" package

San Francisco, CA -- Today, in response to the introduction of a package of public safety proposals by Supervisor Campos, the following organizations, part of the FREE SF coalition, issued the statement below: Advancing Justice-Asian Law Caucus; California Immigrant Youth Justice Alliance; Causa Justa::Just Cause; California Immigrant Policy Center; Community United Against Violence; Centro Legal de la Raza (Oakland); Dolores Street Community Services; Immigrant Legal Resource Center; La Raza Centro Legal; Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights of the San Francisco Bay Area, Mujeres Unidas y Activas; Pangea Legal Services; PODER; SFOP PIA. Members of these organizations will be present at City Hall this afternoon for the announcement of the package.

We strongly support the thoughtful, inclusive solutions Supervisor Campos will present today.

Too many politicians have sought to use the deeply tragic actions one person is accused of to criminalize entire communities who are woven into our city's social, cultural, and economic fabric. It's time to move away from demonization and demagoguery and advance real solutions that uphold our values.

Preventing the theft of dangerous guns from officers' vehicles - a growing problem in the Bay Area - will keep us all safer and set a powerful model for other governments to follow. And cleaning up warrants which are outdated or won't be prosecuted is simply a common-sense criminal justice fix.

It's also imperative that we not turn the jail into a pipeline for deportations through the "Priority Enforcement Program" or PEP. When our local law enforcement is ensnared with a deportation system that lacks any sort of due process, community trust in our local institutions suffers greatly. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is repeating the mistakes of the past, and PEP is merely the S-Comm dragnet by another name. Calling up ICE inevitably leads to abuses and mistreatment. Immigrants are part of our neighborhoods, our city, and our country, and we need policies that uphold our values of equality and due process for all.
