Undocumented Youth to Launch Activist Art Exhibit in SF
Pan-Asian Immigrant Youth Showcase Define Undocumented: Flip the Script
San Francisco, CA -- On August 26, 2015, ASPIRE will debut their public interactive art gallery Define Undocumented: Flip the Script, hosted at the Women's Building in San Francisco from 6 p.m.-9 p.m. Define Undocumented is an interactive art show that incorporates art in activism through sharing the resilient stories of undocumented pan-Asian immigrant youth and families.
ASPIRE members will share their triumphs and struggles of their daily lives in original art pieces and full-scale exhibits painting a fuller picture of the diversity of their experiences. The event will make connections between the power of their personal stories that navigate difficult topics such as identity, history, and yearning for home to a growing political movement. ASPIRE invites the audience to investigate their personal immigration histories in relation to contemporary diaspora on an interactive world map that pins various migration patterns titled Liberate. Migrate.
In addition to illustrating their personal experiences, ASPIRE emphasizes the leadership of directly-impacted communities when tackling the ramifications of the broken immigration system. Through the event, ASPIRE members and leaders will celebrate the power of community organizing and grassroots activism. The art piece titled Black Boxes is a visual installation that uses light and uncovers issues of mental health faced by our community. ASPIRE will also feature artifacts and photography to articulate the nuances of their lives as the basis for advocacy and change-making.
By connecting these threads with campaigns around inclusive healthcare and anti-deportation, Define Undocumented will also provide an avenue for awareness-building and public education.
Tickets are available on Eventbrite and proceeds will go towards ASPIRE's ongoing work with the community. ASPIRE also seeks donations prior to the event. For more information, please contact Hong Mei Pang.
