Advancing Justice - Asian Law Caucus congratulates

Angela Chan on completing four-year term on

SF Police Commission

Asian Americans Advancing Justice - Asian Law Caucus congratulates Angela Chan, senior staff attorney managing the Criminal Justice Reform Program, on completing a four-year term on the San Francisco Police Commission from 2010 to 2014.  The San Francisco Police Commission is a civilian oversight body that is responsible for setting policy for the police department and adjudicating officer discipline cases.

During her term, Angela focused on making reforms that help the most marginalized and underserved.  She made important strides in improving implementation of language access policies for immigrant community members.  In 2011, she also launched the Crisis Intervention Team program to deploy an elite cadre of officers trained on de-escalation techniques and navigation of the mental health system to improve the outcomes of contacts between officers and individuals in mental health crisis.  In addition, Angela strengthened youth/police interactions by educating youth about their rights and pushing through the renewal of a memorandum of understanding between SFUSD and SFPD.  These achievements were made possible through a close collaboration and strong partnership with SFPD, the Office of Citizen Complaints, the Youth Commission, and diverse segments of San Francisco, including mental health providers, domestic violence service providers, youth service providers, immigrant rights organizations, and civil rights organizations.

Advancing Justice - Asian Law Caucus celebrates the significant progress that has been made through engaging in community policing strategies at their best.  Advancing Justice - Asian Law Caucus will continue to support these efforts as a civil rights organization whose mission is to build a more just and equitable society.  We are proud of the strong, unwavering voice Angela has been on the Commission for the communities we serve.  Thank you for your outpouring of support for Angela's work on the Commission.
