Hello !
There are times when I wake from a sound sleep with a sudden gasp followed by "OMG, I have to ..... today!" It can be due to many things, from paying a bill or being prepared for a special workshop. All of a sudden I feel overwhelm at its highest level.
These sudden bursts of worry or stress can come up any time of day when realization hits about a project, situation or goal. What do you do when this happens ?
Many people move right into the upset and start thinking faster, doing more, and building momentum in the direction of the emotional storm until they get themselves into a tizzy. It becomes self-defeating, exhausting and very unproductive.
In the future , when you find yourself swirling TOWARDS the cyclone, stop for a moment and say some soothing thoughts to yourself. Things like, 'I know this is tough, but I will be able to manage it.' Or, 'this is a pattern and I'm going to break it by slowing down instead of speeding up.'
You naturally know what you need to hear in times like this. Often we'd prefer that someone else say them to us to calm us down, however, it has much more impact if we learn to soothe our own thoughts and actions. We build a level of emotional maturity and self-confidence when we do.
So, when the urge to spin into your chaos comes upon you, stop for a moment and tell yourself what you need to hear at that very moment. Maybe it's that you trust yourself, or that everything is going to be perfect no matter what. Continue saying what you need to hear until you feel some relief. If this is totally new for you, there may be resistance, but if you are committed to being anxiety free in situations like this, you will continue to practice them until you reap the benefits.
Here's to soothing thoughts.
Enthusiastically,
Fran
