RULES FOR GIVING

Hello !

Many of us are real givers. You know who you are. You stop whatever it is that you are doing to care for someone else. You forfeit sleep, work, money and personal time in general when the call of duty to help a friend, family member or organization beckons you. You listen to the needs of others. You give without hesitation and continually recommit to giving more if necessary. You give until it hurts - literally. Sound a bit too familiar ?

I get countless calls from those who are completely spent when it comes to giving. I too will find myself in that place and I tell you, it's very uncomfortable. For those of us who love to give, it's very awkward to feel resentment or overwhelm when it comes to doing something that typically comes naturally and joyfully.  When this happens, it's good to remember a few survival guidelines to maintain your sanity. Follow some or all of these rules and find yourself more apt to give abundantly.

  • Take a break if needed - It's OK to take a break and even vital to those who are 24/7 givers. Find a way to get a reprieve and everyone benefits.
  • Give from the heart, not from obligation - Choose to give from a joyful place as often as possible. Listen to your inner voice on this one.
  • Set boundaries: Creating boundaries may feel strange at first but eventually it brings peace of mind. Decide on your comfort zone of giving - when, how much and to whom and communicate it lovingly, thoroughly and often.
  • Replenish your spirit. Meditate, sleep, and connect to nature to replenish your 'love for giving' muscle.
  • Ask for help - many of us feel as though we are the only available person to give. This is a heavy burden to bear.  Look for a support system. Ask for help instead of waiting for help.
  • Give to self- Resentment comes when we feel deprived or lack on our own part. Give give give to self. Buy yourself something, take time to play, read, pamper, and even spoil yourself. (Don't be a martyr - this is mandatory)

Should there really be rules on giving ? Only if you are feeling a negative impact from it.  I talk about this often because I think giving is crucial and want to make sure we all continue building momentum and sustainability when it comes to our givability.

What rules for giving bring balance to your life ?

Have a generous day!

Fran
