THE COALITION CONNECTION
August 26, 2016
Dear NCGS Community,

In honor of the Coalition's 25th Anniversary this year, NCGS Co-Founder Meg Moulton has established an annual grant for a faculty-led team of NCGS member school students. The Moulton Student Global Citizenship Grant will help engage girls in leadership, fortify their strategic thinking, and enhance their global mindfulness by developing empathy and respect for others.

The $1,000 grant will be awarded to a student team in grades 9 and/or 10. Guided by a faculty member, student teams will work on a project they propose that is directed at generating educational opportunities for underserved girls in developing countries. The grant invites students to play a more active, community-wide role in exemplifying the Coalition's purpose and principles by:
  • Building a community of students in girls' schools with an outward reach, broadened global mindfulness, and a gained awareness of their power to make a difference one cause at a time.
  • Engaging the power of many voices to strengthen our communities and world and to generate positive change by contributing to girls and women around the globe in less advantaged settings.
  • Inspiring the next generation to lead with courage, competence, and empathy through cultural understanding.
  • Preparing girls for leadership and lives of commitment, confidence, contribution, and fulfillment through global citizenship and collaboration.

NCGS is currently accepting nominations for the 2016-2017 school year.

The grant is designed to be a launch pad for new student projects directed at fortifying their leadership skills and inspiring their role as contributing global citizens. Preference will be given to nominations reflecting an ongoing commitment on the part of school leadership to support the continued funding and staffing, as needed, of the "start up" project for its 9th and/or 10th graders in subsequent years. Additionally, preference will be given to proposals involving two to three all-girls schools working in collaboration.

Nominations are due by Tuesday, September 27, 2016.

Best Wishes,
Megan

Limited Spaces Open for "Introduction to Girls' Schools" Course

Don't miss out on the final session of the year! Only a few openings remain for the "Introduction to Girls' Schools" online course co-offered by NCGS and One Schoolhouse (formerly Online School for Girls). This course provides instructional insight to all teachers new to girls' schools, be they seasoned educators or new professionals. In order for your newly hired faculty to thrive and succeed at their first girls' school, it is valuable to provide them an orientation to the most effective methods for teaching girls.

"Introduction to Girls' Schools" is a four-week long course and requires participants to spend approximately four hours a week engaged in the class. The final session will be offered October 10-November 4, 2016 and will be led by Margaret Broad, retired Head of School from St. Margaret's School.

The GAINS Network Accepting New Member Schools
The GAINS Network (Girls Advancing in STEM) is a virtual community for high school girls interested in STEM. Through GAINS, students connect directly with women working and studying in STEM fields. Members are able to:

  • learn more about STEM topics of interest, and
  • engage with a community of peers and professionals for support and encouragement.
The GAINS Network provides:
  • a virtual platform on which students establish a STEM profile and connect with one another and STEM volunteers,
  • several virtual mentor events and pairings throughout the school year, and
  • access to STEM professionals in the network.
Member schools agree to:
  • nominate two female student leaders,
  • assign one faculty member to be a network leader, and
  • help recruit STEM role models/mentors from their communities.
