THE COALITION CONNECTION
March 25, 2016
Dear NCGS Community,

NCGS and our strategic partners from the 2016 Global Forum on Girls' Education are pleased to share a selection of materials from the Forum. Now available for free on the NCGS website, these professional development resources are a library of best practices and research. We are sure you will find inspiring and helpful ideas you can implement on your own campuses among the diverse array of handouts, including materials from the YWLN sponsored Public School Symposium, pre-conference workshop, and keynote, breakout, INSPIRE!, and SNAP! session presentations. A direct link to our new "2016 Global Forum Resources Library" archive has been added to the NCGS Quick Links box on the left-hand side of this newsletter.

If you presented at the Global Forum and would like your resource materials added to the online archive, please email them as a PDF to Jen Shakeshaft with the subject line "2016 Global Forum Materials Submission."

Also available upon request, exclusively for NCGS member schools and Global Forum strategic partner members, are videos of all
the Forum keynote speakers, including Gloria Steinem, Arianna Huffington, Kakenya Ntaiya, and more. Special thanks to Bleachers, an in-kind sponsor of the Forum, for recording the presentations. To receive viewing access, please contact Olivia Haas.

Several of the Global Forum keynote and featured speakers are published authors. You can purchase books from these authors and others on the NCGS Amazon eStore. Be sure to check out the section dedicated to the 2016 Global Forum on Girls' Education.

We wish each of you a successful remainder of the 2015-2016 school year, and we look forward to continuing to support our member schools with innovative programming and resources.

Best wishes,
Megan

Girl Up Offering Girl's STEAM Camp in Peru

For the second year in a row, NCGS strategic partner Girl Up is partnering with the U.S. Department of State to host the WiSci: Girls STEAM Camp, which will encompass all aspects of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts & Design, Math) alongside cross-cultural and leadership activities. The two-week camp will take place in Peru from July 23-August 7, 2016, bringing together high school girls from across Chile, Mexico, Peru, and the U.S. to partake in hands-on learning and mentorship opportunities. WiSci is a part of the Lets Girls Learn initiative, championed by U.S. First Lady Michelle Obama and the U.S. Global Strategy to Empower Adolescent Girls.

Applicants must be a national citizen of one of the four countries listed above and be in possession of a valid passport. The 2016 WiSci camp will be conducted exclusively in Spanish, so applicants need to have a working proficiency of the language. Applications are open through April 10.

Agnes Irwin School to Host STEM Think Tank

Building on the success of its first STEM think tank, The Agnes Irwin School and its Center for the Advancement of Girls will host Sharing Solutions 2016: Advancing Girls in STEM on April 15, 2016. This one-day think tank and conference will be held at one of the nation's premier science museums, The Franklin Institute

Sharing Solutions will focus on the theme "Designing a Better Pipeline," exploring ways to ensure that more girls and women find success in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Decision makers and innovators in K-12 schools, higher education, nonprofit organizations and STEM industries will come together for an engaging day of critical conversation, setting the stage with a "call to action" by science evangelist Ainissa Ramirez, author of Save Our Science: How to Inspire a New Generation of Scientists.

The event will also include TED-style talks and attendees will receive an introduction to design thinking and participate in design-thinking workshops.

Julia Morgan School for Girls to Host United State of Girls Rally & Summit

Middle and high school girls are invited to a United State of Girls Rally & Summit hosted by Julia Morgan School for Girls (JMSG) on May 14 from 9:30 AM - 1:00PM. The goal of the event is to mobilize a national movement of girls aged 13 to 18 to finally pass the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA). Attendees will be encouraged to take on a leadership role in getting the ERA passed.

The day will kick off with speakers Gail Sheehy, feminist, author, and journalist, and Cynthia Foster of Equal Rights Advocates. Students will also participate in brainstorming sessions to strategize how to get their school communities involved and how to use social media to spread the word nationally and influence those in government to pass the ERA. A "position" paper will be developed from the Summit that will be sent to the White House before the United State of Women Summit convenes on May 23.

Contact JMSG Head of School Sandra Luna to RSVP to attend. Live streaming of the event will also be available at www.juliamorganschool.org.

Highlights from the NCGS "Listening & Learning Tour"
Last week NCGS Program Associate Eliza McGehee visited a member school in her current home state of North Carolina. Here's what she said from the road:

"I had a wonderful visit to Saint Mary's School in Raleigh. After a student-led tour and advisory session, I was able to attend an all-school assembly. Conducted by the student government officers, the assembly featured a performance from the hip-hop dance class and two junior class speeches. I also met with members of the Student Experience Taskforce. During the summer of 2015, the Taskforce, comprised of faculty and administrators from all departments of school life, spent time researching and reflecting on best practices in the education of girls. This led to the development of 12 guiding principles, which provide a lens through which the school can develop programs and assess every aspect of the student experience at Saint Mary's. Students were able to voice their opinions and share ideas about the principles during an all-school workshop last fall."
